View Full Version : Hoplessly Confused: S1 and SB-26

I've read and re-read my S1 manual and talked with Fuji a couple of times --
but I'm still hopelessly confused.

Following the recommendations of the S1 manual, I bought a Nikon SB-26
flash. The manual made it seem that it would interface with automatic TTL
settings.

But, it appears that it doesn't. Fuji support tells me that I have to use M
(fully manual) settings. So, I have to choose a speed and an fstop to meter
TTL.

I can't use S or P, just M. If that's true:
1. What will have priority the speed or f stop?

2. What is special about using this Nikon flash? Couldn't I have just bought
any flash?

3. What happens if I just shoot "Auto"?

For those of you using these combinations, how do you set the camera and the
flash?

I'm totally confused. Would love to read something if someone has a
suggestion.

TIA

I use the Nikon Speedlight SB-80DX and it works like a charm with the S2. I was probably lucky, but the guys at the store recommended that one and I'm glad I listened. Hope you sort it out though.

Hi there

I have the S1 and SB-26... I have been using the SB-26 in TTL mode (with the S1 in P, A, S modes) and it works just fine. You have to set the ISO value, f-stop, and zoom (focal length) on the SB-26 manually (since the S1 doesn't send this info to the flash unit), but overall, I get nicely exposed images with it.

I noticed that 3D Multi-Sensor Balanced Fill Flash isn't supported with the S1 - just Matrix Balanced Fill Flash. Not sure if I'd notice the difference between the two, but all of my Nikkors are "D" lenses... just seems like a bit of a waste :(

The other thing - flash compensation is NOT supported! Oh well. If Fuji doesn't come out with the S3 in the next few months, I guess I maybe upgrading to an S2 afterall...

Question: When I use the SB-26 in TTL mode, no matter what I set the f-stop/aperature on the flash to, the images are still exposed correctly (i.e. the camera aperature setting does not match the one on the flash). Do I really need to set the f-stop value on the flash in TTL mode?

I've used the S1 with SB-26 and it works fine. The iso and aperture does not display correctly on the flash but the exposure is correct. The only thing that doesn't seem to work is the automatic zoom on the flash. I usually set the zoom manually on the flash to the widest for the lens that I am using.
