It looks like a heron to me, too. What do you think about the black-crowned night heron, Nycticorax nycticorax (http://animaldiversity.ummz.umich.edu/site/accounts/information/Nycticorax_nycticorax.html)? There are some photos of both the adult and immature birds here (http://www.mbr-pwrc.usgs.gov/id/framlst/i2020id.html) that seem to be a close match, though your photos are far better!

I think you may have got it HPK. The first website looks correct, the second, the adult pic of it looks like it has a long string of white feathers going down from the top of the head, where mine didn't have that. So, maybe correct for the second bird above and not for the first?
