I posted this message in the Fuji general discussion as well (and have gotten some excellent replies....thanks), but thought I should post it here as well in case some D70 users haven't seen the other message....
I've had my S2 for about 11 months now, and although I have gotten some great pictures with the camera (certainly numerous pictures I never would have gotten with my prior digital - Coolpix 990), I've been reevaluating if the S2 is really the right camera for me. I'd consider myself a moderately advanced amatuer, who uderstands most of what I read here, and when I have time I try some experimenting, but I rarely find time to experiment. With everything I've read concerning the D70, it sounds like it might be a better choice for me. I know several of you either own or have experimented with the D70, and I would greatly appreciate your opinions of the D70 relative to your experiences with the S2.
I primarily use the camera to take pictures of my kids (ages 2 and 5), and am usually at the mercy of whatever lighting is available. The oldest has started playing sports this year, so I'm starting to experiment with sports photography and need something that will keep up with the action, athough 5 year olds playing soccer isn't the fastest pace shooting situation :) . I've been continuously frustrated with the flash/TTL performance of the S2, and have lost a lot of confidence in the S2 for flash photography. Additionally, I've tried numerous combinations of metering on the S2, and can't seem to get it quite right (still underexposing). Although I occasionally use RAW format for special occasions, I usually shoot in high JPEG mode. I've been using Photoshop for about 10 years now, so I can correct most of what bothers me, but my time constraints make mass image-editing a chore. Most of my images end up being printed as 4x6 prints, with the occasionaly enlargement no larger than 8x10.
Here's my current setup:
S2 Pro
SB-28 speedlight
Nikon 50mm f1.8
Nikon 28-105
Sigma 70-200 EX HSM (with 1.4 and 2.0x teleconverters)
From the countless reviews I've read, I'm seriously considering selling the S2 and SB-28, and moving to the D70 and SB-800 combination. Anybody have any opinions on the relative merits of the S2 and D70 in the context of how I use the camera? Specifically I'm interested in the following things:
1. Color (S2 colors are great - are the D70 colors well produced)?
2. Flash performance - I read great things about iTTL and flash metering on the D70. Has your experience been equally good?
3. Metering - D70 seems to really excel in metering - true?
4. JPEG sharpness
I've had a great time using the S2, and for me it's really about having fun. Any input you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Having read posts on this site for a long time now, and having applied many of the suggestions, I value the opinions here implicitly.
Regards,
Chris
