Probably not new to some of you, but I saw this neat little effect over on the Retouching forum at DPREVIEW - a FishEye effect without having the fisheye lens....I'll give a couple of examples, but first the steps...
1. Crop a section to a square
2. Filter/Distort/Spherize (100%)
3. Use the eliptical marquee tool - you want to cover the entire sphere - the easiest is to hold down the shift key (will then get a circle) ... start with the cross hairs in the upper left corner and drag until all edges are touched - this should then cover the entire sphere
4. Select/Inverse
5. Edit Fill - Black
(in the original message thread, the author sometimes uses lens flare .. Filter/Render/Lens flare)
