We are making the news on other digital photo forums. And it seems that they are predicting our imminent demise. We can probably expect a lot of lurkers in the next few weeks.

I normally haunt three forums on the internet. This, of course, is one of the sites. I also visit Gary Fong’s forum because I am a wedding photographer. They talk business, legal, pricing and general wedding stuff that I find interesting. The third place I visit is a BBQ forum where I share information and laughs with other BBQ fanatics. I am one of the founding members of that forum and it has grown faster than any forum that I have ever visited. We have regional and national gatherings and even have teams that enter competitions across the country.

Lets try to prove the people at Gary Fong’s wrong about our demise.

Wayne,
do you really think we will demise ?
The things happend in this forum are from my point of view very usual. People are coming, people are going. Even when they have posted serveral thousands of posts. I am a moderator in an another forum. And similar situations happend. "High-End-Posters" were leaving, others were coming. It is a question about the complete community. You could talk about a diing forum when 20% of the standard-users were leaving. One person does matter for some weeks, but nothing for some month. When 10-15 key-posters would leave this forum, it might be slight different.
I have tried to follow the problems between Mike and Igor but very early I have stopped to follow. Why ? That´s usual. Please take in account that all the people over here are virtual. It might be a wonder if I would meet you personally, it might be a wonder to meet somebody else with a distance more than 1 flighthour for me.
This forum is international and we should agree that other countries would not agree what is usual for us.
I have posted a picture of my daugther half naked. There is no problem here in Europe but I have learned that this is forbidden in several parts of the U.S.
Did I try to offend you ? No way ! It was my way of thinking about this suff.
All in all,
don't let this forum die. It is worth the survive in the WWW
Wayne, this post wasn't adressed to you personally, my intention was for everybody

As soon as bickering starts, I pass ,that is, not join in, and hunt for pictures.

We have a old saying over here '' one swallow does'nt make a summer'' just because one ex member (buckeyed nomad) has suggested that this forum is'nt all it was , does not mean we are going to 'implode'
O.K. we've had problems lately , and the've been addressed , but on the whole i'd rather stay here than any of the other forums , and i am also a member on Fred/Miranda , Photozo , and a couple of British photo sites , i also visit Gary Fongs , and Rob Galbraith forums .
So lets not give anyone the satisfaction of our demise .
It was one of yours Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) who said
''The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated''
Lets prove it , and behave ourselves .

What a few people don't understand is that this is a marketing ploy to get more users and traffic over here. ;)
I look at Gary's site from time to time and I respect the community that he has assembled. We are a small community who are still learning the ways of democracy in type. This forum has been the focus of primarily the S2 Pro. This camera is going to go away as we're well seeing with people moving the SLR/n, D70, D2h and even over to Canon. Another set of people will be leaving thier S2 Pro's for the D2x if/when that comes out. There will also be some that stick with Fuji and get an S3.
Reading some of the comments from that thread on Gary's site, I see someone mentioned something about no one posting any questions. I like to think this place is a pretty easy to get around place and with all the problems of the S2, being a primarily S2 site and the maturity of this camera, there aren't many questions left to answer. The Search engine here is fast and easy to use. Most every question has been answered regarding the camera itself.
There is a small problem here of people posting pictures and asking what they can do better and then taking it the wrong way or just not posting pictures and not asking questions because of some of the arguments that have come up. This is something everyone is going to have to overcome. We're all here to help with the exception of a stray bashing user that shows up on a rare occasion. Fear not, we'll stick up with and for you.
Another thing we'll all have to accept is that we're letting other camera's come in here that are Nikon based. There will be questions about those that will need answering.
I guess you could call this period of time a "re-alignment". I don't like to lose users, but we do, every day. We also gain a user every day so it balances out. I try and monitor this place to the best of my ability, but sometimes that isn't quite enough. I need to rely on the users here to be mature and sensible about things. If I can't rely on that, then go ahead, argue away and leave the board, but try and do it in Private messaging to save some face here. :)

Im also here because it is a reasonable size and ya can post.
I was on Nikonians which broke 10,000 members while I was a contributor but now its over 20,000.
If I log on once a week at Nikonians, there are approx.1500-2000 messages of mostly learner or gear repetition.

Implode!!!! Only if you let it. Why on earth should it implode? :) Forums like this are what you make it - make it informative, light hearted, enjoyable and youve hooked users - if it becomes agressive and offensive then slowly but surely the users will leave - human nature I think. So far, i'm enjoying it - good work Bryan in keeping it all ticking ( er... sorry again about that old thread Brian/Bryan  )

I never said that I predicted our demise. Not me. Things like this will happen from time to time and then go on. We really have too many members that post dailey to really implode. And as fast as this thread gathered opinions is testimonial to how alive we really are.

just bookmarked the BBQ site Wayne, thanks for the link. As far as the rest of this goes, I've had the time to decompress and mend my ways. I will never knowingly go that far out on a limb here again. I've more or less schmoozed Igor by promising to stay clear of his posts in the future so if he wants to come back, fine with me. I'd just as soon forget about all of the crap last week. Gotta live in the present. NZZZZ's my new role model.

BBQ? Wayne, they're looking for judges again for the cookout here Sept 18th. I was a judge last year for the bbq and had a good time! We were stuffed with bbq for a few days due to all the samples I had to bring home. (Full size servings are a must to judge but you don't eat them! Just taste or you'll never be able to get through it all! six chicken thighs, six shredded chicken helpings, 6 pork ribs, 6 beef ribs, 6 beef other parts, and on and on!)
Do you cook for it? I won't be a judge this year because it's the weekend of our outing in Colorado, but passed the letter on at work, don't know if they'll follow up with it.
Implode? HAH! Interesting? Yes.
It does make it difficult due to the differing cultures and if we get just one who's not willing to understand that they will never understand but it doesn't change the way things need to be done, a hot conversation soon follows.
I agree....TAKE IT PRIVATE

Sure, this site will change .... it is a community, and like any community, people move in .. people move out .... but the community will survive!
Tough choice tonight .... Watch the Olympics, or the Green Bay Packers (I'm originally from Wisconsin...guess my wife just made the decision.....he/she who has the remote rules!)

I made the post concerning the problems on this forum at www.digitalphotographers.net but there are a lot of people who have noticed the same thing. I hear this almost on a weekly basis. There used to be about 3-4 forums that I really enjoyed, one is gone and this one is going through some growing pains. Another photographer I talk to regularly said he sees a comparison between this one and a locker room. More self constraint needs to be utilized. This is a darn good forum but there seems to be a problem with the way people receive critism and getting bent out of of shape. They need to learn to accept it with a grain of salt or skip posting something for review if they don't know how to accept it with a grain of salt. Critical reviews come pretty quick here, the competetiveness is evident. Insults have chased away more than just the latest, (Igor). Other popular or well known members have left in a huff.
This site just needs to bring it down a notch so as not to offend so many people.

I agree. We've got some acid tongues who, I think, get a kick out of causing a stir. If it were up to me I'd have silently kicked thier a**es out of here. It's pretty easy to tell the brain-deads from those who come here to have fun and maybe pick up a tip or trick. All in all I do think the site has gone through some growing pains which it may or may not recover from. Only time and the members will tell. I will remain positive and will not hesitate to kindly intervene if poo-poo hits the fan or someone crosses the line. I expect the same treatment myself.

Remaining positive or taking it private when intervening is also the best way to handle it to keep everyone from joining in and either defending or slamming the cause of the poo-poo. too many times someone has crossed a line and those trying to rectify it cross another line to let them know.

I could not agree more, Linda. In fact, I was sent a PM by someone who thought I was pointing fingers with my original post. Not at all. My point was, and is, that before we hit the submit button we should think about what we have written. If it's just a 'neener neener' type response, why bother? Look before you leap, I guess. If you must respond in less than kind words, an email is the best way to go. I also think a positive attitude is the way to go. I need to get back to the place I was when I looked at every post as though it were written by a smiling and happy person. In fact, I'm happy and smiling right now! :) Here's to a kinder forum.

We've only had 4-5 arguements this year, which is still a very good record in my book. I think these arguements have just been with the wrong people though and the forums here were probably slammed by them in other forums when they left.
I don't think it's a problem of harsh criticisms. I think it's a problem of not being able to take criticisms. Almost everytime people are pretty spot on about what they say about someone else's shot, but that someone else already has it dead set in thier mind that it was a perfect shot and they'll defend it to the death attacking back with either or both Pride and Ego perhaps. That's what needs to stop. Either take it or don't ask for it or in a mature manner, ask why they think so and learn from it.
I am not going to put up with the ghetto arguements for much longer myself and if I go, you know what that means. Not saying that I'm leaving anytime soon, I understand a fight will break out once in a great while in the open. That's kinda ok (I don't want to see any of it in the open, but it will happen anywhere). If you wanna get bare knuckled about it with someone though, take it to a private message. Pretty easy to remember that I would think.
Maybe we need a commitee to vote immediately on banning a user that starts a fight? NO. Everyone should just know.

Brian, not offended here, when the old site crashed, and we had to re-register I just used my real name.
What does offend me is the attitude and acid tongued comments that have been getting posted. I think it was on this site, but if not I'll say it here. I've seen a site disapear, right now, from what I've found, I consider this one, Rob Galbraiths, and Gary Fongs sites as the ones on the net worth the time. Each has it's merits and I don't want to see any of them go away, but I think I've seen two or three people from this one, if I'm not mistaken, leave in a huff, after a variety of reasons, unfortunately justified. I think it's uncalled for. A good forum, and photography associations openly share ideas and comments with respect.

I make a point of finding good as well as bad. And my attitude about art is that if you do not like then keep your mouth shut and go on to something you do enjoy. I for one think that all negative comments are a waste of my time and only hurt the person that created the art.
And the Atomic Buffalo Turds are easily Googled where you will find out that they are jalapino peppers that are split or hollowed out and filled with cream cheese and a bit of BBQ or a little smokie sausage. Then you wrap the things in bacon and smoke them for a few hours. These guys are literally "to die for". Anybody that dies without eating a turd has never lived. Next time I fix a batch I will take a few pictures and post them.

I had a boss that was from Seattle in the mid 80's and he coined the name Wichita Wayne. Simply because my name is Wayne and I am from Wichita. The BBQ site is a big site with lots of activity. I am a founding member but I do not run the site. We have a couple of other founding members that really do a professional job at that. Kind of like Swampy has done here. We should all give daily thanks to the guys like Swampy that really make this all happen. Also the Bandera Brethern started because they had a common interest in a brand name wood fired smoker oven called a Bandera. It is just a web site similar to this forum.

I don't think this site will implode..or at least I hope not. I lurked for months and months and then joined last September. I spent so much time lurking because, being a raw novice, I was intimidated by all the talent here. I finally bit the bullet and joined because I knew that having expert critique and advice was the only way I was going to improve my skills. I am in debt to several members here for the assistance they've given. However, I'm not a pro photographer (and I appreciate the patience of those of you who are..) and don't have any ego tied up in my pixekated profferings. I am, however, a pro level musician. I don't play for a living, but often play with folks who do. Some of those individuals are very complimentary about my playing. Some offer constructive criticism that always helps, and some are just jerks who were the "Put Me In Coach" types in high school. Even though I do have some ego tied up in playing music, I don't let negative comments bother me and chalk it up to a difference in taste. What you have to realize when listening to comments/opinions/critique on this or any other forum, is that most people who are musicians or photographers, are not trained instructors/teachers acquainted with the foundations of human learning. They're artists, not teachers. I know you've had an Algebra teacher who knew every thing there was to know about the subject....might have had 46 Ph.D's in the area, but couldn't teach it and ended up only frustrating students. Some of the most helpful people on this forum seem to either have some training in teaching others or just come by it naturally/intuitively. Those people typically start off telling the poster what they like about the photo and then discuss how they would improve it. In a nutshell, that's how critiques orta be done. I guess the short form of this post is I have benefitted immeasurably from being a member of this forum and plan to continue picking the brains of the esteemed members here and I hope that folks can come here unencumbered by the contraints of ego. I don't think this board will go belly up, but in the unlikely event that it does...all of you guys tell me where you're going so I can follow and aggrivate you elsewhere.

implode, never done that before. Cool.
Seriously- Is everyone here taking stuff that personally? I mean, really?
Maybe I don't get 'it' because pix aren't my paycheck, but jeez. Isn't this stuff an art as much as it is a science? Even more so art? Er, is that even art more so.. anyway, it's subjective right? Doesn't everyone have an opinion, but no one is more 'right' than another. Maybe there are more technically right opinions. I mean, if I want blown highlights then so be it! You don't like blown highlights, then say so.
I guess I don't see what the hoopla is all about, I have not seen that many mean posts. Perhaps I thought they were being sarcastic and not mean when in fact they were trying to be mean! When I read the goodbye thread I was thinking- where have I been that I missed this shootout.
Do you think maybe we're over-reacting? I mean, if someone wants to 'leave' then s/he can do so with no drama, right?
This would be a good time to say - if I have offended anyone, then you took what I said wrong. Sometimes its easy to forget that not everyone knows my sense of humor, sometimes biting and sarcastic. That is, I'm from New Jersey. If someone meant to offend me, let me know... I missed it and thought you were being funny :)
I have a saying at work for those who get upset over petty things, 'they need cancer.' Yes, that sounds mean, but what it says is that they need perspective. I've got a friend in hospice right now with cancer, that puts my world in perspective.
Ah, that's it... perspective. Everything looks good from here!
You guys/gals have nothing to worry about, just look at all the other stuff going on. There's a lot of people getting help, ideas, etc here.
In fact, I need to thank whomever it was that posted the fact that his/her mirror locked up and camera went dead when the cr123s died. This just happened to me and after a bit of panic, I remembered that post, changed the cr123s and was VERY relieved.

"The report of my death was an exaggeration" - Mark Twain in a cable to his publisher.
It only goes to show that when you are a popular, going concern there will always be people who want you to disappear. Success it seems breeds contempt (or at least a handful of chicken little types).
Implode? Really? I can't see it happening. IMHO a few squabbles, with egos bruised won't cause this forum to collapse into itself. I do wish that we had more discussions about equipment and technique and a little less about photographs. Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of pictures, but often they don't make for a very benefical discussion unless they are tied to equipment or technique. But that's just me, I rarely comment on pictures anyway.
The people who are predicting an end to this forum are most likely the same folks who are still eating the canned peas that they stocked in the bomb shelter in preparation for Y2K. However, many things do have a shelf life and a natural end. So if this forum ceases to exist, it most likely will be a slow fade to black not some kind of cateclysmic event sending ripples throughout the world wide web.
But as I said, that's just me.

If I can find out the name of the book, then I can figure a way to get a copy.

hey folks.. coming from a old dog, on the forum community (joined zuga's list when it was a list in 1999) and helping admin another, then starting my own, ive seen it all. In any community there are changes and growth. Participants change as was mentioned. This is a good one to hang out and it's stood the test of time. My opinion? lol. post if you want. Visit if you want. and remember. you get what you pay for *smile*

Voices from beyond!!!!
The story is that the 18 yr old Nipper hound dissapeared last Dec 13, when Serge and I were up Mt. Atkinson, which is about 3km from my home.(mostly vertical, distance wise.) He knew his way home from there, as he was "free range" and lived in the area since 1992.
This was the last we heard from him, until last week, when my wife mentioned that she saw a car with "Nippy" licence plates.
I logged onto one of my stock agents, and found that the wizzing shot, called "Nippy" had sold , for the usage previously described.
I think this strange co-incidence is that Nippy is trying to reach us from the pearly gates, by sending us bucks and strangly marked vehicles, and Im sure there is more clues in the book!
Gotta get it!
I think he approves of IGOR, who has to fill his paws!

He'll probably end up in the poster with all the other greats, Dean, Boggie, Elvis .... and Nipper taking a wiz at the bar :p

Too many pictures? What's that supposed to mean? Some people will complain about anything. Implosion is not an option. :D
