I have noticed that the Owner's Manual for the S2 avoids mentioning Compact Flash™.

The manual usually only mentions SmartMedia™ and Microdrive.

The only places I have found mention of Compact Flash is on page 20 where it says "Some CompactFlash™ cards may not be work properly. Please contact the card manufacture [sic] for compatibility." and in the Specifications on page 120 where it says "Some Compact Flash cards may not work properly."

I also noticed that it says on page 20: " (!) Operation of this camera is only guaranteed when it is used with FUJIFILM SmartMedia."

I take all this to mean that Fuji would rather not promote the use of Compact Flash, and direct as much attention as possible to its own brand SmartMedia.

It is all marketing...

I place smartmedia and compact flash in my S2, and all function well, only have 1 smartmedia of fujifilm and the others are all of other different marks, exactly compact flash that is of Sandisk 256 "red label", and work fine!
He is possivel that it has some compact flash that they do not function well in the camera, but is everything a question to try before buying.
Before buying, it asks for to the salesman who leaves you to try!

To try not cost nothing...
