I was goofing around with my S2 last night and shot a flash picture at 1/500 sec. Expecting the image to look screwed up I looked at my preview and the image didn't have curtain block. I increased the shutter to 1/1000, 1/2000, and finally 1/4000. Same thing, no difference in the images from an image shot at 1/125 and below.

This is great! I'm gonna try using fill flash in bright sun tomorrow and see what happens... Too cool!!!

Check in your viewfinder for the shutter speed indicated there. Here is what I have observed: The top LCD will let you set any shutter speed you wish, but when the flash is popped up, or a dedicated flash is mounted in the hot shoe, the shutter defaults to 125 which is displayed in the viewfinder. When you connect the strobe via sync cord or use a non dedicated flash, you can produce the curtain block since the camera won't automatically adjust the shutter.

I think a somewhat more accurate description of what happens is to say that if you have the shutter speed set to something higher than 1/125 and pop up the flash or turn on a shoe mounted, Nikon compatible flash, the shutter speed indicator on the top LCD will blink. It doesn't revert to the 1/125 speed on the display but when you shoot the photo the camera does change to 1/125 and the shot will be free of any curtain effect.

You are right, Mike. The shutter speed blinks on the top LCD when set above 125 and using pop up or dedicated flash, but in the viewfinder 125 is displayed. That's what I meant by the camera "defaulting" to 125. Thanks for the clarification.
