No Low Battery Warning?

In the middle of shooting, I got an Err message on the top lcd. I know I didn't see the battery low warning on the back lcd. I panicked and turned off the camera and turned it on and tried again with same result. I then pressed the "Play" button and then I saw the animation of the battery going from very small to big and camera turned off itself. I replace the AA battery and the problem went away. Has anyone seen this behavior?
Or, have anyone seen the low AA battery indicator?
I am using maha rechargeable batteries.

I had the same situation a couple of times. I never seem to get a "Low Battery" indicator, but I do notice that when the S2 is writing to the microdrive, the battery may show less than full. I usually change out the AAs about every 300 shots to be sure.
