I mainly use a Nikon 18-35 ED zoom. I have been getting cracking results. I didn't want to spend over twice as much for an extra 1mm on the 17-35.

Brenz I recommend the Nikon 28-105mm zoom. The cost is around $300 and is a good all around lens. It is has macro capability and is tack sharp. I use it as my everyday lens and love it. Ken

I have a bag full of lenses, but the 28-105 Nikkor spends about as much time on the camera as the rest combined.
It's an amazingly sharp lens and VERY versatile.
I use it on my S2 and my N80 as well... (on the rare occasions that the N80 makes it out of the cupboard!)

Hard to say what is best since you don't give us much of an idea of what it is you like to shoot. Certainly a 28 - 120 ( or something in that range) is a good idea as a general purpose lens. If you do a lot of closeups, make sure that the macro range is suitable for your needs. I have a 35 -135mm that is wonderful for many things but the macro (35mm only) sucks big time.
In the 17-35mm range I have the Sigma, which holds it's own against the Nikon at a lot less money. It's a good lens to own if wideangle is desired.
If at all possible, you should be testing lenses before you buy. Or at least buying from a place, that will allow you to return if you are not satisfied.
