Please, please, please can we keep this forum free of this bloody football nonsense! - its hard enough to avoid it in daily life without it besmirching my favourite virtual meeting place
Cheers, Robin

Robin,
This IS the almost anything goes section. We've had subjects I'm not fond of, either, but I just roll to the next because it's obviously interesting to others.

Quite right Linda , you tell him off .
I watched the whole match and Greece fully deserved their victory.
But Figo was gracious in defeat , at the after match interview .
There is one hell of a long way to go , England play tournament favorites France tonight .
No doubt Igor you were sad to see Russia beaten by Spain
Robin it looks like you and my wife will be watching BBC2 for the next 3 weeks. never mind .
Come on England .
Brian
P.S i'll keep all of our american cousins up to date with this enthalling subject

Brian, I jumped up to the ceiling when Spain finally scored! :D
Though I must say Russia wasn't THAT bad I had expected to see.
Still my impression is France would be the winner , sorry Brian :)

Robin,
This IS the almost anything goes section.
Quite right Linda, I often don't notice what section posts are in as I just click "New Posts" when I log on.
As you say I'll just have to try and ignore it, trouble is this bloody World Cup thing has only just started and it feels like we've been swamped by it here for weeks already.
Might have known Brian would be keen on it!, as he says it has a devastating effect on the television schedules (not that I watch much TV but while I'm here on the computer I hear constant wails of anguish from my wife as she changes channel and finds yet more football...).
Oh well, off on holiday for two weeks on Thursday far away from the TV - mind you, we've timed so that we'll be back before the only sporting event we do like starts...... Vive Le Tour de France!
Cheers, Robin

Robin
I am not fond of football or soccer as we Yanks call it. I don't understand it that much even though I have had 6 foreign exchange students for a year each who were absolutely wild about it (3 Germans, 2 Finns and an Argentinian). I am absolutely wild over American college basketball since my old school seems to be firmly situated in the top 4 or 5 schools every year and I take off from work when the tournament starts. Linda knows that I get so nervous that I can not watch but the game is still on TV so I can hear. She stays out of my way until victory is assured and then she gives me an atta boy. I have many sleepless nights during tourney season replaying each game in my bed instead of counting sheep. Silly but a failing of us humans.
Where you going on holiday? Since I love Europe so much with a few exceptions, I envy you guys across the pond who can go to other countries like I drive to Colorado. That is one rationale for us moving after retirement to Romania---inexpensive living, fairly easy to get to my favorite places such as Vienna, Salzburg, Berlin, Prague, Hamburg, and very easy to get to some new places such as Budapest, Kiev, Istanbul and even Greece. So much of the world to see, so truthfully little time to see it. My wanderlust has taken me to most of Europe, all of Scandinavia, much of the former
soviet northern republics, Africa, Turkey and Mexico and some South American countries. I have been told that I could have been very well off if I had not spent all the money traveling but I think I would have been poorer for staying at home.

Nah, not at all. We can talk about hooligans if you like :) I must admit that soccer fans are very loyal and vocal. Linda and I went to a German soccer match in Hamburg between Hamburg and Bielefeld and it was very entertaining and very, very cold. We found our seats to find we were surrounded by police and Bundeswehr members. With a few minutes to go with Hamburg up 1-0, we found out why they were there. They all got up and surrounded the part of the field where all the fans who were painted and wearing all the scarfs and drinking all the beer were to ensure that no riots or mischief was going to happen.

Anything would be a better subject than football Brian :)
Mel,
We're not going anywhere exotic on holiday, just France as usual. A few days with friends near Toulouse and then wherever the fancy takes us....
Think I'd better unsubscribe from this thread now before Brian & I come to loggerheads.
Cheers, Robin

That does not look like an olde English Pub. Looks more like our chains of franchised watering holes. What happened to the rustic pubs :)

It happened to see this thread today and I have to agree with Mel
Basketball is my favourite game since it has to do with some victories in European and World cup and it is closer to our tempo.
Anyway thanks Igor, but there is this Sunday evening match between Greece and Russia.............
