I'm using lexar cards. when I put the card in the reader in the computer (g5) and take it out again
The camera tells me the card is not initialized. When I put it back in the computer all my pictures are still there.
This has happeened on 2 cards. I did not erase the total contents of the disk because I wanted to save something. Should this be happening??
Fuji told me the mac was initializing the card and making it unreadable.

I have the same problem with one of my lexar 128 mb CF card, im still not able to use that card on my fuji , but on the pc this card is fully recognizet perfectly.
I dont know if u have try to format the card on the camera, i have seen that till the card is not usable or not inicialized u can pres allways the play buton and after that the menu , due to the fact that this card is nor inicialized u need to repeat this steps 2 or 3 times , till the screen shows u the format/delete menu, try to format it on camera, and look if the error persist.
In my case the format proces gives a error mesazhe, but that dosent mean that at your card can give the same , the electronic devices are so strange :).

Dont forget to backup your information that u have on this card , b/c the format clear them all.

I've experience this too and had to reformat (quick) to FAT16 instead of
FAT 32. Don't know if this will help but you might want to give it a try.

Kerrie,

Check and see if your Mac is placing any files in the root folder of the card. If it does, the camera may not recognize the card.

FAT16 and FAT32 are two Microsoft filesystems, FAT16 can go up to 2GB. FAT32 can support larger than 2GB. S2 only supports FAT16.

I can't help you looking at the root folder from a Mac since I'm a Windows geek. But you should be able to navigate up to the topmost folder on the card. There should be no files in there except the folder for the pictures.

Thanks Andre, for explaining the FAT16 and FAT32. I didn't realize Kerrie
was Mac (shouldn't assume things). Sorry Kerrie.

Kerrie:

This may not be your problem - but for what it's worth.

I have found that when a card will not format in the camera and the readout says 'card not initialized' - the card CAN be reformatted by:
repeatedly depressing PLAY then MENUE. After about 3 sequences, the FORMAT command appears and the card can be reformatted. Nothing in the manual says anything about this - I discovered it by accident.

Some cards WILL NOT WORK in the camera. I tried some of the ULTRA cards - and had to send them back.

Was it the Lexar you had a problem with?? Or the Sandisk? I use the Sandisk 1gb Extreme have for several months and never had a problem. If I remember correctly it's the same as the ultra just for harsher temps.

I also use the Lexar 1gb and picked up yet another 1gb sandisk card this morning.

All my cards are now Sandisk Ultra's 6 x 128 , 4 x 256 , 2 x 512 , 2 x 1 gg.
never had trouble , always format after downloading , always format in camera .

BTW the D70 supports FAT 32.

Nice Tip :)

Kerri , i think that Fuji not include in their manual this tip b/c its not a normal operation its like a bug on the fuji firmware , b/c a camera have no reason to try to play a card that can't inicialized, pressing the play buton fuji try to read a non known thing (card) during this time the firmware goes for a sec or two on Play mode ( this depend from the type of demage on the card) and if u move fast and press the menu during this time the firmware goes to the format /delete sub menu (routine).

Everything that I have purchased from Lexar has wound up giving me trouble (mostly card readers). I finally got rid of all of it. I have had several students that have also had problems with Lexar memory cards. Gary Fong's site has an entire thread with Lexar problems that are enough to convince me that Lexar is not a company that I do not want to deal with. There customer service is also some of the worst in the business.

I have used several MicroDrives but one of them failed when it was 11 months old. It replaced with a new unit in three days at CompUSA. The relpacement drive gives us trouble from time to time and has to be recovered, partitioned, and formated on a computer. That usually always happens in my son-in-laws S2 Pro. When a MicroDrive goes wacko Photo Recovery always restores all the pictures but it is really a pain (especially at weddings). As a result, we usually never use the MicroDrives at weddings.

My son-in-law has a couple of 256 MB Sandisk cards that have had to be recovered but I have no idea why they failed. They always work fine after a format. We cannot duplicate the problem so we do not think it is the camera. I have use SanDisk (512 MB and 1 GB) and Promaster (512 MB) CF cards with flawless results.

One other thing, my son-in-law had trouble copying and reading image files on his G3 iBook so we replaced it with an PC laptop and gave the iBook to my young son. Not that Apple is bad, because it they are not. It is just that I know a whole bunch about PCs and only a little bit about Apples, and the business network was a PC P2P network. It also made my son very happy because his music teachers use Apples to record and process music.
