manual states to use nikon flashes only. Messages on this forum suggest a wide variety are in use.
Do you think the manual advice can be disregarded. I am not that fond of using flash except to fill; but there are times. I don't particularly want to pay the nikon premium but obviously don't want to blow the camera.

The manual also says that the Microdrive is the only supported CF type media, but many if not most people use CF cards. I can't say which Non-Nikon flashes will work, but I know many people use Metz with great success.

Good luck,

I use Sunpak flashguns and have had no problems, except when going in too close.

Hi,

The difference between the S2 and the Nikon dslr series are that the fuji will work with most aftermarket flashguns, whereas the nikons only work with their dx flash units.

Therefore makers such as metz provide guns that are feature rich, and support ttl matrix metering. I use a metz 70mz and it works very well with the S2. Compare the price of a metz to an sb flash unit, you get alot of bang for your buck.

I've really pushed the boat out in getting the camera - in fact I had to give up smoking to pay (pretty good incentive). I'm therefore thinking of more downmarket flashes- Jessops' in-house brand. (I know this retailer isn't an american but willing to bet the flashes are available under a different brand).
They do a jessops dedicated to nikons.

And since two of my respondents are at least living in England thought I'd ask about jessops. Not sure that 'bang for bucks' is a donny expression though.

I wouldn't buy the Jessops flash.
Cheap fragile and not as well equiped as the Metz options or the Nikon guns.
You would be better to give up drinking too and get a Metz or a Nikon

Power per pound might be more appropriate for UK user.

Dave,

well what a star giving up smoking to buy an S2, cold turkey is hell.

Some useful flash options are dependent on what you want to shoot with flash.

Everday stuff you can use a lower specced gun like a sigma dedicated to nikon af- or a cobra, however for the money a metz 40 mz is a pretty good buy, loads of features, find em second hand quite often thru jessops. Anything that works with f50/f70/f100 will work on the Fuji.

If you want a bit more power metz 50 mz-70 mz, I got my 70 mx thru jessops for £290 store demo model. Just do a search its suprising what you can find threw jessops second hand line.

Anyroad its nice to hear from someone close to home, even though your a mancunian (crap at football) Sorry I support a scouse team, I know Im a w----r.

Well you have me convinced about the Jessops. Though I can't go to my wife and say I want £290 for a flash; she'll say "whats that thing on top?"

It looks as though I'll have to be patient, as I am incidently with my football team. (For the benefit of american friends Manchester has two football teams, one a world class club; probably the most famous in the world and always winning things, the other team is a joke, the butt of many a comedian's jibes; I support the joke).

On the photography front; I took the S2 to the ground on Sunday and framed a perfect shot of our star striker Anelka about to score a certain goal. Unfortunately I had the setting on single focussing and I must have been slightly out; it didn't take....and our star striker missed.

Mike,

Ha so you got our reject!

Anyhow if your after reasonable priced guns go look on ebay, plenty of good flash kit on there at the moment, well worth a bid.

All the best

I know this going off at a tangent, but when the reject wins the game against his old club one has to comment.

I use a Metz 32MZ-3. The flash is great, but no 3D Multisensor Fill mode. I'm looking for a 40 MZ-3i to replace it with the same SCA adapter.

According with the SCA 3402 M adapter manual the following units provide 3D MSF on the Nikon F-80: 40 MZ-3, 50 MZ-5, 54 MZ-3, 70 MZ-4 and 70 MZ-5.

The communication between the body and the SCA unit is the best after a Nikon Speedlight.;)

Discovered the magic of TTL flash photography with this Metz and Olympus E-10. Just had to buy the Nikon module when I acquired the S2. Very consistent exposures. I recommend.

The picture below was taken on manual (1/125 - F8) with Tamron 20-40mm without looking in the viewfinder, the camera being at arm's length.
