View Full Version : Is Photoshop CS crop tool broken?

I regularly use the crop tool in PS/CS to correct perpective distortion, beacuse I take a lot of photos of glass fronted pictures.
Say the picture is amost square. I take a photo of the picture, slighly off square, so that I don't get reflections etc. So the picture is slightly off square, which is best corrected with the crop tool.
The trouble is, regularly, after the crop the picture is really badly stretched so it is no longer square.
So, I do it again, and again, and maybe the 3rd or 4th time I do it the picture turns out square.
Or I cheat and resize the picture after PS/CS has messed with it, but this means a reduction in quality.
Anyone else have this problem?

I'm not having a problem with the CS crop tool myself.

Hi Rob,
have you tried to reset the crop tool? Right click on the crop icon and reset tool (in windows).

I was not aware that you could distort or correct perspective with the crop tool? I always transformed first then cropped.

Crabby,
When you select the crop tool, and make a selection , you should see a "box", (next to "Opacity) marked "perspective". Check that box. Then you can "grab" one (or more) of the corners and adjust the perspective.
Once you make a selection with the crop tool and check that perspective box, I'm sure you'll see what to do.
Give it a try!

Redslug,
If you have a "bootleg" copy, it may have a bug.
If it's a legit copy, try re-installing the Photoshop program.
Re-installing will probably fix the problem.
Let us know if that works.

Hi Rob,
I run a few test with a similar image and i do experience the same problem once in a while (yes, it's a legit copy). i found that I can avoid the problem if i hold the shift key while dragging the place holder.
hope this helps

I'm glad to see that someone else has experienced this. What I find is that the bug become more more likely, the more pictures you crop. Eventually, I restart PS/CS and keep going utill it becomes annoying again.
Thanks eddie :)

I had the same problem last week and found that if the image was enlarged so that not all of the crop is on screen it went to a long thing crop rather than a regular crop. If the image and crop are was all on screen it worked fine.
