SB50 for backup flash?

I've found a good used sb50. Does anyone have any experience with it? Would it be suitable for a backup or general purpose flash? I was a little concerned about the low power. Or would you vote for maybe an sb25.

When using the 50 or othe dx flash wireless, does the sensor have to have line of site to the on camera flash to function?
