View Full Version : ...and it works in B&W too !!!

I thought that the same pic I submitted in the "Photo-Color" forum, under "My best one", would also be nice in B&W... I imagined that the texture was exactly the kind of thing I've been looking for for years, when doing exclusively B&W (on film, of course...) !
Workflow: IMAGE/MODE/GRAYSCALE > LEVELS > USM 250,0.2,2 !
What do you think ? Is it worth keeping it in black and white too?

Hi JP,
You've certainly got the texture ( good lighting again ! :) ) but I wonder if it's worth playing with the mix of R, G and B to alter the the tones of the fruit itself and 'leaves'... I always use a Channel Mixer layer and vary the proportions of the colours just to see how the tones vary and settle on one that pleases me.
This subject is mostly orange/yellow so any change will probably be subtle but worth experimenting with !
Just a thought...
Cracking images you're doing at the moment btw - the fun is showing ! :)

I agree with Keith , Jean-Pierre , great job , i only wish i had your eye to see objects as you do, i can see landscapes etc , but not still life , it's an art .
Hope you don't mind , i'm feeling bored this morning , so i've given your image a bit more punch and presentation.

GREAT ! ...that's exactly the reaction I wanted to get !!! ...as everyone sees and feels differently a picture, I think it's a nice "challenge" to play on an "allready good photo" (if I dare say so, but for once... and I do believe this is a good one !) !
The differences can be so subttle, for example just the different "crop" Brian made: I guess I'm "stuck" with 1.4:1 (A4 size), so I don't even CONSIDER cropping on another ratio... Stupid, in'it ?
For Keith: I have to confess that I DON'T KNOW how to play with the Channel Mixer... that's why I don't even think of it :o but with time -and examples-, I'll get on with it...
Well then... please carry on playing with it... I'll learn !!!

Jean-Pierre - Of course in this case, I prefer the color version (reminds me of my mother's pies!),however, this is one that also works in BW, if you can get the right contrast/tone combo....hope you don't mind, but I did 'play' with this (sure does look like your reflection!)

Rhaaaaaa ! LOVELY !!! I like very much the "color" you added... it looks like "silver-plated" ! ...and the "reflection" is funny, too... :p

B&W is very nice JP and Brian gave you a diagram for sales presentation. (wink) The finest compliment any photographer can give another is, "You have a good eye." I extend this compliment to you.

Hi JP.
I've had a go starting with the colour original...
The main step was using channel mixer as threatened ! :) I settled on 65% Green and 35% Blue - the blue was very revealing and showed the best promise for achieving a bit of tonal variation ( the fruit being almost black in the blue channel ) ...
I did a few other things - crop, rotate and mirror, knocked back the highlights from the flashes, very slightly knocked back the sharpness, applied a very slight 'S' shape Curve and added a hint of tint.
Anyway - at least it shows how you can play with the tones of an image :righton:
All the best,
Keith.
