I found this post on another site, but, even if it's not really about photography -although there are quite a lot - it's a MUST SEE !

There are 27 pages to look at, with text and photos... I found it VERY impressive...

Thinking that Chernobyl is only ONE out of HUNDREDS of nuclear plants in the world, and ANY ONE MAY one day have the same problem... Scares the s*** out of anyone...

Your thoughts ?

have seen this site a few days back - it covers an interesting story and a tribute to a sad event in human history. I really enjoyed it as the viewpoint of a girl who lives THERE. But I wouldn't go as far as "National Geographic has to buy it!!!", as some of dpreviews members posted.
And then is the stupidity factor there, which really did bother me a bit. Her original purpose to drive there, was to opportunity to being able to drive like the devil on her bike. Can't she not do that somewhere safer? Think about how fearful we are about a few UV sunrays in the summer, slapping on liters of sun lotion. I could imagine, that Tschernobyl's radiation does a bit more damage; maybe not right now; maybe not even at all to the girl, but maybe later to her kids. Running around with a dosimeter doesn't make the radiation go away.
Somewhere she also mentioned, that the reason she likes to speed with her bike there, was that nobody was living there - nobody to get in the way. But at another point she states, that
sometimes TV crews and tourists go there, AND that the animal population, in particular the deer population, is striving. Now it's one thing, if we hit a deer with our cars (been there), it does enough damage, but now imagine what would happen to somebody doing 130mpa on a bike!!! And nobody being there to administer CPR within 50 miles. Or what if she hits another person (or a fellow biker, who had the same idea of speeding there)?

Helena's photos are very haunting, but I don't agree with her reason for being there (racing her bike).
Nevertheless, an interesting documentory.

I have been involved with Australian Aid for Chernobyl for a number of years now through my ethnic Russian community in Sydney, particularly through my involvement in Scouting. We have hosted children from Chernobyl and Chaliabinsk in Sydney for R&R.
They recieve free medical and dental care while here through these two organisations, I have met some delightfull children and very caring personnel who have come out with them. Its a story close to my heart and experience. A sad legacy of the lunacy of our species.

Chernobyl incidentally is translated into Wormwood in english in the book of Revelation, the star which falls to earth making bitter the waters. Not a conspiracy theory :) , just an interesting fact.

Peace out

Serge - I bow to you for your active involvement in helping these children. Good to see people who can still care for others; that happens by far not enough in our egoistic and selfcentered world.

Chernobyl will leave it's legacy for centuries to come.

... I guess Helena's not "only" a mad biker, but to be able to go there, she must also be some king of scientist, involved in the whole proce, be it building, decontamination, medecine, etc...
I don't think that in this part of the world (or any other when it comes to that kind of technology), someone could go there REALLY freely...
I think she just take advantage of her position to -also- have a good time with her bike... I guess I would have done the same at her age... as anyway motocycle is getting "riskier" everyday in any part of the world !
But in any case, I find great that she thought of SHOWING what happened, is happening and *might* happen in the future...
