Another nimble feat has N.Y.ers walking tall
Tuesday, March 9th, 2004
When it comes to pounding the pavement, there's no better place than the Big Apple, according to a foot doctors group that yesterday named New York the nation's best walking city.
"New Yorkers walk more than anyone else in the country," said the American Podiatric Medical Association in a report issued in conjunction with Prevention magazine.
The study pointed to Safety City, a traffic and walking safety program for school kids, and spruced-up fitness paths along the Hudson River as adding to the city's foot-friendly cache.
"Walking is just about the best health bargain around - fun, easy and absolutely free," said association President Dr. J.D. Ferritto.
The association also said the walking is good on the other side of the Hudson River.
"Most people don't associate this gritty metropolis with a stroller's paradise," the report said. "However, Jersey City is one of the most densely populated yet pedestrian-friendly places in the country."
The group also had praise for Philadelphia - "home to the most podiatrists per capita," with its own foot museum - along with Chicago; St. Louis; El Paso, Tex.; San Antonio, Tex.; Washington, and Madison, Wis., where "walking has been a high priority since the 1960s."
