Anyone care to talk about filters from a semi-beginners standpoint? I would like to get at least a protective filter for my new Sigma lens and I want to choose wisely. This one calls for an 82mm, which, by looking around are all higher costing filters because of the large size. I know polarising filters, what they do and to get circular.
When I was shooting Canon, I would get a Hoya Skylight 1a filter, just for protection. I never really got into filters and what they all did (besides polarising and star) and as I'm looking around, I see Skylight 1a's and KR-1.5's. What do these really do for me and what are the differences between the two? What are UV's used for? I've seen some IR filtered pictures here, so I think I have an idea of what those do. Contrast? Color Conversion? Color Compensating? Neutral Density? Spot (I believe puts an out of focus "frame" around the center of the picture)? Special effect filters?
Any special website(s) out there to point me more to a general beginners guide to filters?
Thanks!
Bryan
