Did anybody try to connect WLAN between camera and computer to eliminate Firewire cable?

Not sure how this would be accomplished.

The firewire interface requires a driver which is specific for the S2 camera this driver lives on the PC/Mac. If you plug a WLAN card into a PC it will use it but only to request connection to another WLAN device. This would require a WLAN interface in the S2.

This does not exists or am I missing a trick ??

I have a laptop & desktop both running XP Home, and wireless-networked together.

If I set up the laptop hooked up to the camera in the garden running the shooting software, is there an easy way I can control the camera over wireless LAN from my desktop in the house?

The obvious answer would be to put XP Pro on the Laptop, but seeing as I just bought a second product key for XP Home......doh!!!

Thanks
Tim

As I mentioned in an earlier post, you can do it easily and free from this point. Install a program called VNC, which is a remote control software for PC's, like PCAnywhere, but free. I do this with two laptops outside in my yard to get shots of humming birds.

Setup:

One laptop with wireless and firewire to the camera on a tripod, VNC and the Camera Shooting Software running.
Second laptop with VNC on it to remote control the first laptop.

VNC will basically let you see the other laptop's screen and control the mouse and keyboard. Over 802.11b wireless, it's fine for snapping pictures. For viewing the pictures on the remote laptop, it's kinda slow. Over 802.11a or g, it's much better for viewing the pictures, but I don't really do that anyway, just snap the pictures then when I'm done, either view the pictures on the first laptop directly, or copy the pictures somewhere else on my network either via wireless or hardwire (I use hardwire at this point though).

You can get VNC from: http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/download.html and you do not have to fill in your name and email address. Just click on the windows version and download.

Quick setup for VNC:

Download, unzip, run setup, just hit enter a bunch of times going through the setup accepting all the defaults and it installs in a second. Go to Start>Programs>VNC>Adminitrative Tools and install VNC Service. At this point, you can either reboot to get the service running, or go to Services under computer management and manually start the service. Either way, when the service starts for the first time, it will prompt you to set a password. You only have to do this on the machines you want to remote control. Once this is done, install on the second machine (install the service if you want, but you don't have to), then run Start>Programs>VNC>VNC Viewer and a small window will pop up. Put the name or the IP of the first machine in and it should pop up with a password prompt. Type in the password you set on the first machine and you're in.

You can use PCAnywhere to do this as well, but that program is not free. VNC runs on everything. Period. From Palm pilots, to Pocket PC's to Linux, Solaris, Unix, All Windows flavors.

...will give that a go, just waiting for a 4-pin to 4-pin Firewire cable to turnup (my laptop has 4 pin socket).

Thanks

No problem. I have a couple spares here if you want. haha. So, I'm assuming you haven't used the Camera Shooting Software yet then? If not, I'd get familiar with it without the remote control software first.

... be able to get that cable a bit quicker locally!

Good idea, I'll play with the shooting software, thanks again,
