View Full Version : How strong is the lens mount?

I've been shooting with my Nikon 80-200 f2.8 lens lately and have wondered how much torque the S2 lens mount can take. The lens weighs nearly 3 lbs. I try to support the camera and lens unit as best I can and when using a tripod I use the lens mount instead of the camera mount. Do I need to be extra careful when using such heavy lenses or should I not worry about it?

Any lens has the tripod mount on the collard or on the lens itself
then you should mount the tripod on the lens...the S2 body with
batteries weigh about 30oz so it's can hang on the lens not the
other way around.

If this is the old push-pull 80-200 without a collar, you could try to find one of the aftermarket tripod mount collars that were produced by a couple of companies (but that are no longer produced).
Having a massive lens, especially fully extened hanging off the front of the camera isn't as much a concern for the lens mount as the tripod mount that is part of the battery housing grafted onto the N80 body.
The newer 80-200 zooms come with a collar, and any lens that comes with one should be used with one when using a tripod.

I have never feared for the strength of the lens mount, but when I walk around with my Nikkor 300mm f4 on the camera, I'm always paranoid about a strap buckle breaking or slipping and the whole package meeting the concrete.
I end up walking with the strap around my neck, and the lens in my hand...
