No focus assist light

After learning that the S2 I bought from a local store was on the recall list, and that the other 2 units the store had were already opened packages, I decided to return the recalled unit to the store and ordered a new one from a NY camera house.
When using this new camera (not on the recall list) I cannot get the focus assist light to activate even with all lights off in the room.
I have checked the custom settings and focus assist is set to 'on'.

The assist lamp does light for red eye reduction and self-timer.

Any ideas, or have I just gotten a lemon?

OK, I had the focus area accidently changed to an area other than the center. I decided that perhaps I ought to RTFM and look for a possible solution...... It works just fine...
