View Full Version : Outside Location Shooting with S2

Shooting S2 for outside location portraits and seem to be underexposed no matter what I do. Light readings just like I did with medium format which was always "right on" according to Miller's. Any suggestions as to changes I can make to get better exposure? Love the S2, and think it is probably something I am doing wrong. Willing to learn!

Which metering mode are you using? You might try using a handheld incident meter and see how it agrees with your metered measurement.
It's no secret that digital cameras are more sensitive to exposure than color negative film. I used to routinely overexpose that stuff 1 stop and never had a problem. Now it's more like shooting slides.
I think there's a CSM setting #5 that adjusts whether the metering is locked with the shutter or remains dynamic until the shutter is closed. I have both focus and AE lock on half-press so if the subject is backlit or well offcenter, I will halfpress to lock on the subject, then reframe the shot before fully releasing the shutter.
Of course, I am not shooting rapidly moving kangaroos or anything.
Good luck,
Matt

Are you using a polarizing or other filter that needs to be compensated for?

Hi Matt!
Thanks for your reply. Shooting in manual mode just like I did with MF. Incident meter set at ISO of camera with dome under subjects chin and pointing at the camera! I will however check the "in camera" meter against the incident reading and calculate the difference.
Again, thanks for your timely comeback!
