What is it good for???
Well it is sharp for one thing and the sharpness overcomes the limited zoom range. Macro is decent but needs to be locked in macro mode. Gives a bright image in the finder as do most f2.8 lenses. Little distortion that I can see. All in all, a darned fine lens.

I'll second the above. An excellent lens to leave on the camera that is very dependable.
However, as happy as I am with mine you might also consider the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 that was recently released that many rave about, as it has a bit of extra reach that might be very handy around the house.

The Nikkor AF 35-70mm f2.8D is a great lens. It is the lens I generally leave on the camera as a default. I have two of them (one -D, one non-D). It is sharp at all lengths. The constant aperture does not change during zooming, making it far easier to use in studio situations with controlled lighting. The macro gets in close, but is only useable at 35mm. It is a very sturdy lens, made with plenty of metal.

Thanks guy's for the input I was more concerned about the very limited macro range
I may have to go to something like the Tamron 28-200mm f 2.8 macro - but that's also a big and heavy piece of glass !

Shroom, If you are going to pass on this, would you pass the offer to us here at the forum?

Another vote with the 35-70--- its a superb lens---for me it gives better results than the 28-70 afs in image quailty.
