How does one "chip" an older Nikkor lens?

What is "chip"?

What kind of lenses are suitable for chipping?

My understanding is that it is a modification that allows older lenses to work on newer cameras. I don't know if there are limitations, or how much it costs.

I saw a Nikkor 200mm ƒ2.0 lens on ebay that sold for less than $1000 that I thought might make a great lens on the S2. My impression is that if it were "chipped" it would work. Wow equivalent 300mm f2.0 !!! (Manual Focus)

Sigh. When I get the old database restored, there should be a mention about this somewhere. There's some guy (out your way somewhere even) that does this and has a website and also lists lenses that this will work with.

Hmm. Actually. I found the link and he's in Nevada. Man. My bad. :)

Actually, the guy who rechips lenses---the old MF ones, is Rolland Elliott but I do not know his web site----oops, just found it.

http://home.carolina.rr.com/headshots/Nikonhome.htm

It lists what is needed and which lenses can be chipped.

Thanks Bryan,

I think what I am referring to is an electronic CPU "chip" put into AIs lenses so the camera knows what the aperture is, perhaps distance info (D)?, or some other data.

Our Bird Man, Ron Green has chipped his MF telephotos to work with the S2, and I think that is what I need if I can ever nab a 200mm f2.0!

I looked at the link you gave, and it appears to be just a mechanical upgrade to AIS technology, which by itself is not enough I am sure.

I did a Google search of "Chip Nikkor Lens" and got quite a few hits. Right away, I found some full-featured pages, such as http://www.naturfotograf.com/lens_CPUconversion.html

Anybody out there with some chipping experience?

That's what I needed! He can even chip a 200mm f2.0

Sigh. My first failure. On the first day the forums back up even....

I'll try harder. :)

Tom,
I read a few NEGATIVE reports on Rolland Elliott work, just to let you know...
