Just a small thread to ask what everybody pays for hosting services for their work.
What does a website cost, and more important what do we think it should cost?

Depends on "your work".
Hosting services can range from free to very expensive depending on what you are looking to do.
Are you doing your own HTML/ASP/Whatever code? How large are your pictures going to be? Do you need front page extensions? Are banners/pop-up ok? How many hits/how much data are you expecting to send to browsers in a month?
I send out approximately 11 gigs per month through my web server. Some sites allow only 300 megs per month, some allow more, some less, some unlimited- all depends on your requirements on what that's going to cost. Next would be bandwidth as well. Are you looking for T1 speeds, OC48, ISDN...? Some people charge more for more bandwidth.
I pay, I would say about 200 bucks a month, but I'm a pretty extreme case because I run my own server for more than just my web server. It probably costs me 50 bucks a month just in electricity plus over a meg up and down internet speeds which have been fine for browsing most of my pictures and what not. Maybe less than 200 bucks a month, since I have that server, I write off 500 square feet of my house for office space at the end of the year to help alleviate some of my taxes. :D

I pay a beer a month[1] for colo of my own server at a high-bandwidth facility. That's not the usual rate though.
If you're running Linux on a Web server, there's a really cool open-source PHP application called Photo Organizer that's great for arranging and databasing photos (though PHP seems to often need updating for security.)

My hosting provider (ServInt) generally offers managed servers, and I've been happy with their services. Anyone who's interested, please e-mail me directly- proberts@patriot.net and I'll see what sort of price breaks I can get.- managed servers mean they do the OS and Web server, but content and everything else is up to the customer, meaning it's not a great choice if you're not capable of handling webmaster duties.

I have a G4 setup and it hosts all my pages...
Admit that it is slower than the "top servers" I have at work.
But I don't have too much trafic, mostly friends looking at my stuff and some small business accounts, nothing really heavy...
I used to run a PC with a server program, but there was way too many viruses for me to keep track on everything...
I love my setup and have run it non stop the last few months.
