View Full Version : Am I the only one with a new G5 here?

And could my new G5 be the cause of a " card not initialized error" and a "card error"?

My 512MB IBM microdrive failed to mount on my desktop. I am not sure that I had installed the software on the computer.

I thought that the disk would mount automatically and use IPhoto if nothing else.

The camera worked fine on our way back from MA over the weekend. We even took nearly thirty photos on the way back.

But, when the camera failed to mount, I took a chance and removed the cable before I could determine which disk to "umount". Now all I have is a disk that only works as an external USB drive on my wife's Win98 machine. I haven't tried the old Powerbook yet. I did get the photos off of the card in the Windows box.

Well, wish me luck trying to get the card to initialize. I hope that I can salvage this drive. I REALLY don't want to buy a replacement just yet.

Does anyone have any hints for me?

I've read all the posts that I could think of.

Hi there

I had a similar problem with my 30GB X-Drive... I could use it as an OS X drive, but couldn't copy my CF card to it. This is how I fixed it.

1) Put the MD in your S2, connect via firewire/USB (or put in card reader connected to your Mac)

2) Click on Applications --> Utilities --> Disk Utility

3) In Disk Utility, click on the "Erase" tab

4) In the field, "Volume Format", select "MS-DOS Filesystem"

5) Click "Erase"

Anytime I used the Mac Filesystem format with my external disk, it crashed when when copying a CF card to it. Everything magically worked when I used MS-DOS format.

You have nothing to lose with this... give it a try.

Good luck!

It's probably wise to let the camera do the formatting. Try not format or initialize on the Mac, as both OS9.2.2 and OSX populate the disk with invisible data base files and desktop folders etc.

If you do it in MS DOS as Ballroomboy described it should be ok, but since the camera an easily reformat, why not let your camera do it for you.

I'm not saying this screws it up, but I've seen disk errors that come up from time to time, that were easily solved by formatting on the camera.

I reformat each time after I have offloaded my photos on to my hard drive and before a shoot.

G5 WOW.

Just read a review though and all tests done on it were slower than a PC. What are Apple up to?

We must have read completely different reviews of the G5. If you are talking about clock speeds, then Apple's computers have always been slower.

Apple runs RISC processors which can be likened to a two-stroke engine.

That out of the way.

It seems that I have a problem with my IBM 512 MD. I can see the drive fine on my wife's Win 98 machine. It looks like I am in the market for a new MD. Of course I neglected to purchase backup memory when it wasn't needed. Now I need it and don't have it.

Does that prove that I am not professional?

When I bought my S2 a couple of months ago it said in the manual to make sure and install the software for the camera first before connecting the camera. Have you tried installing the OSX version of the software?

That is what I think my mistake was. I should've made sure that the software was installed. I thought it was, but maybe it wasn't. It is installed now.

Now that this thread is nearly completely of topic, can someone make available the file structure of a working removable storage device?

If you have now installed the software, can you now see the disk? or can you see the disk in the camera?

In the camera, all I get is a "card not initialized" and a "card error" message.

The card has not yet been mounted visibly on my desktop. I may need to enable that. I checked my mounted files systems in Terminal, but it wasn't listed.

The G5 is less that a week old, so I am still personalizing it.

Have you manged to get the images off the drive onto the pc?. If you have, then why not intialize the drive in the camera.
I have not had any trouble downloading straight from the camera to my G3 laptop running X.

Thanks,

Yes, I D/L'd the images to the PC after I couldn't see it on the G5. I had no previous problems with my G4 PowerBook.

It was only after plugging it into my new G5 (which didn't have the Fuji software installed) and not seeing the disk image mount and then pulling the plug out of the camera, that preceded the situation I am in now.

I have had no problems in just over a year with the camera nor the disk. Nearly 5000 images later, the MD seems to have been rendered unreadable to the S2.

I seem to have run into trouble. I get two error messages:
"card not initialized", and "card error".

I am able to get to the FORMAT option on the S2, but after the format attempt, I get the "card error" message.

I'd like to know the original file structure on the disk if that even exists. That way, perhaps, I can trick the S2 into seeing the card's existing format.

Hi there,

When I have opened the drive on the mac the file diectory is FUJI_100.

The card must be ok if you can connect it to a PC via a card reader.
Have you tried to reformat it from the mac as a dos format drive?

Thanks.

No, I haven't tried that yet. I went to MD for the weekend. I'll have time to play hen I get home from work today.

That suggestion will be my first task with this card before I start searching for a new one.

Stay tuned...

Alfa is fine by me as long as we aren't confused with DEC Alpha.

Not that there is anything wrong with that...

Shouldn't she see more of you now that you have such a fast computer you shouldn't need to spend as much time with it.
