I am looking for a book to help me with Photoshop, I am computer literate, but new to digital imaging. I have found a book called Photoshop for Digital Photographers by Scott Kelby which looks good. Can anyone recommend this book, or perhaps another favourite? I might say that I am not a particular fan of the "Dummies" series of books.....

Thanks

Gary

I can certainly recommend that book. In fact I only entered this thread in order to recommend it, it's excellent.

i have that book, it's value for money if you look for something simple and well explained, there are some good tutorials and they are shown step by step.
No CD enclosed.
There's another one i like, but it's much more difficult to read and understand: "the photoshop 7 wow book". it contains many many useful tips, and has a cd with very useful actions, brushes and styes.

Yes, the book is good.

Here are some others

One other that I use as my bible is called "1001 Adobe Photoshop Tips ". It is expensive at £50 or $70 but I can always find out how do to it using this.!!

Adobe Photoshop for Photograhphers by Martin Evening.
Master Visually Photoshop 6 by Ken Milburn (I'm sure therer must be a V7 out). This is good as it gives both Mac and PC shortkeys.

As an alternative you can go to the library and pick it up.
I've read a few this way and taken notes...
With those notes the help section in PS wil do pretty well.

I have also found that there are tons of tutorials online once you get stuck.
And there are magazines that have great tutorials and are often "more fun" to read... and you have "Tom" here at the forums.

But yes it is a good book.

Gary - there are a lot of good tutorials available free on various internet sites (PhotoShop user groups, etc)....I tend to be a 'sucker' for PhotoShop books, however, I have a few that I like:
The Kelby book you mentioned.

Photoshop 7 Artistry - Mastering The Digital Image - Haynes & Crumpler

Professional Photoshop - The Classic Guide To Color Correction - Dan Margulis

Photoshop 7 Studio Techniques - Ben Willmore (I haven't used this one much yet - not because it isn't good, I just haven't referenced it).

Regards,
Bill

the best PS book I have read is:

"the Photoshop book for Digital Photographers" by Scott Kelby.

It is very well written and has lots of useful, easy to understand info.

Recommended highly!

I purchased about 3 books and keep finding myself making references back to:
"Photoshop book for Digital Photographers" written by Scott Kelby. Greta book! Then you also have your typical searches online for small tidbits or questions. Trying using the book for awhile to get a feel of where subjects are. I suggest you have several book markers for a quick referral once you get busy with your picture editing.

Good luck!

Katrin Eisman's Photoshop Restoration and Retouching 2nd Edition is an excellent supplement to Scott Kelby's book. I use both.
