Guys can you help?

I love my mac's and I've read a bit via google and I see others having an issue however none of them seem to have a valid answer...

My macbook pro is getting steadily slower and slower on the internet it takes forever!!!!! it's like I'm on dial up at times! I've done the tests on the dsl line and its fine it's the computer like jumbling it up... and I don't know how to clear it??

I've emptied safari's cache no difference to speak of.. it's version 4.0.2

I even tried this clear everything program which wiped out everything still slow..

I'm using mac os x 10.4.11

anything else I can tell you??

It's taking me forever just to load pages and reply to the posts...:(

thanks for any ideas or suggestions...

OH and nope no window stuff on this I don't want it anywhere around it LOL!

Do you have antivirus software loaded? While there aren't technically viruses, there are Trojan Horses and Spyware that can be gotten. Also, does Firefox do the same "slow" thing?

You could also run disk utilities and fix permissions. This can sometimes unclog things.

Have you tried Firefox?

What space do you have left on the machine?

Is the hard drive getting full? I think a full or nearly full hard drive will force a good computer to slow up.

I sometimes have 5 computers running on my ethernet network. On Monday mornings "they" like to do Apple's automatic software updates (downloads - not installs). Sometimes there are a lot of MB flowing in via the internet tubes and it gets clogged. I notice some things aren't as snappy. I think all my computers sharing the internet connection causes slowdown. Do you have other internet connections doing things in the background?

I sometimes have a terrible time posting in these F-Mount forums. Everything else in the universe is fine, but the F-Mount drags. (This hasn't happened that I can recall in the last few months.)

Hi Guys,

Thank you for your help :)

Sorry for disappearing like that, my dog has been really sick, I've been playing nurse like 24/7 with him or babysitting my other dog so he doesn't go crazy I haven't even been to the studio to shoot for over a week.. I just rescheduled everything... sometime I might sleep more then an hour at a time sheesh..

Thank you for the suggestions, I did run the disk utilities, repair permissions, I had never known to do that.. still no faster.

Ok as far as how full...... 148.73GB capacity ......111.99GB available

Sorry to hear about the dog. Hope he feels better soon. You have enough head room on your hard drive, so that shouldn't be an issue. Could be a virus ... you'll have to run a virus program to find out. If things drag online for me, I do a shut down of the modem, router and computer(s) for 5 - 10 mins and then start up the whole thing again, it usually works, but I must say that this is probably ISP specific in my case.

Do you have TechTool? You can use that to diagnose problems with the hard drive, memory, etc. It's not too expensive and can be found at most Apple stores.

Last but not least you can see if you are running the latest version of Safari ... they may have fixed some issues ... and you could consider upgrading to Leopard, although it is a long shot in fixing the issues you have described. If all else fails you can see if an Apple tech has any answers.

Btw, I sometimes find that this site has problems with speed, so it's not just Tom.

Later, cheers,
Adrian

Wouldn't think it is a virus. Have you tried other browsers, could be you need to trash the preference file for safari. Move it to the desktop with safari shut down then restart safari and see if it helps, if it doesn't you can move the preference file back.

Hi Adrian, no I don't have tech tool, however the apple store isn't far I can get it.

Little Rebel felt well enough to stand up for me last night, he cried a bit he was trying so hard, however when he got up and I held him a little he was all smiles, like look Mom I did it!! Well actually I think my smile was even bigger then his! :) My little guy weighed in at 113lbs, the vet said to bring him back again I said oh yeah sure let me just pick him up like everyother pocket puppy and do that for you!

I checked I am using the latest version of safari.

Yeah the laptop is slow on any site though, it's driving me crazy.. even the dsl test I did awhile back was showing something in my computer was clogging up. I'd love to blame it on the phone company however it worked fine before.

I do notice the forum here is slow though, it shows that even on my pc at the studio.... however multiply it even worse on the mac and it's absolutely Painful! You just say oh forget it!

Mel,

Andrew has a point. Before I switched to an Intel iMac and Intel MacBook I was having speed problems with Safari and OS10.4, strangely FireFox was not affected. The Giant who inherited the G5 iMac, only uses FireFox (and OS10.4), he says it works fine. So it may be worth a try....

Sorry to hear that Rebel is under the weather, I do hope he springs back. Bob (the berner) sends his compassionate woof. I know what it's like to have to carry a large dog into the vets but you have me beat with 113 lbs. I can pick up Bob, but he's only 85 lbs. Yeah purse dogs have their charm, but personally I like something much bigger.

Cheers,
Adrian

I LOVE YOU GUYS!!!! Thank you!!

Well granted it's been a whopping two minutes however I moved safari not sure where I just clicked remove from dock LOL

anyway Firefox.....and it's no longer sitting there spinning 'loading' which was driving me more nuts then I am! So far so good!!

Yeah pocket puppies are great for some, traveling and such sometimes easier... however both my boys are HUGE and I sleep like a baby with one on each side of the bed, sometimes both on it, if I'm really good they let me have a little room myself!! I would be absolutely lost without them. Rebel even made it up on to the sofa in the living room :clap::clap: still off his food, and not moving a lot this started over a week and half ago however we seem to be having a few good days here :) He will take his pills I put them in tillamook cheese although that syringe he's really not crazy about but we get it done!

Well kudos to Andrew! He spotted that one right off.

Good to hear that you are not waiting anymore (we all know how you hate that) :-)

Thanks Adrian, but the problem isn't totally solved, Safari shouldn't be that slow. I bet it is a preference file that is corrupt.

I can't figure it out on my son's computer either. It could be that the newest versions of Safari don't work well on a G series or Motorola processor computers (which is what Mel and my son have) or some kind of corruption. I have tried the preference files and there is no difference. Frankly, Safari and Firefox both work very well on my Intel processor machines. I wish there was a scratching my head smilie.
