I have not used my camera for a few days, I went to turn it on today an nothings happening :(
I have swapped out the rechargable AAs to ones which I *think* are OK, but nothing. Arrgh!
I'm now charging every AA I own. :(
Am I right in saying that the camera should work (OKish) without the two 3V Lithium batteries?

Rob take out the 123's , the S2 won't work with discharged 123's in, but will work with no 123's in . If you put in new AA's and get a EE message in the top LCD press the shutter to clear it.

When the camera is dead the first thing you should do is remove the 123s. The 123s charge the internal flash and assist the AAs by helping to maintain even current in the camera's electronics. But in reality you will not see much of a difference in the camera if you leave them out and don't use the inboard flash. If you do chose to use them then you must remember to remove them if you plug in the A/C adapter. If not it will discharge the 123s and the camera will be dead until the batteries are removed.
