so, last weekend, i loaded my "work" computer into my car, anticipating a weekend of fun installing software and playing with all the images shot on the new S2.
arrived home, opened SUV trunk, watched little old imac spill onto driveway head-first. TAPED it together so it at least works enough for me to earn a living, but discovered there's not enough memory for Finepix software, or anything for that matter. minor oversight.
new camera=new computer
i'm considering an emac G4. anyone have any persuasive arguments against it? or, any reason why i should go another route? if you can't tell, i'm on a bit of a budget.
oh, and no pc's for this girl. "once you go mac..."

I think the eMac is a winner, and would buy one myself if I had room.

It has a very good flat screen 17" CRT monitor. The CRT is far more color accurate than an LCD screen.

The G4 processor screems far faster than you can think. I use G4 processors for my work.

Get one with a Combo Drive in order to archive files to CD and view DVDs. The Super Drive adds the ability to record DVDs.

The price for a 1GHz model is US$999 direct from Apple. http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/70707/wo/Cl2ypEUimPop2uy1YX9s29UK3ru/0.0.7.1.0.5.13.0.1.1.3.0.7.5.1.1.0 I prefer to buy right from Apple so they can sink the profits back into research. I don't need the cheap free printer or not-quite "free" RAM upgrade you would get via Mail Order Catalog.

You should get a RAM upgrade right away as the stock RAM is not quite enough to do much. This is easy to do yourself. You can put another 512MB of RAM in for $US$88.99 from http://eshop.macsales.com/MyOWC/Upgrades.cfm?model=181&type=Memory&TI=%23TimeFormat%28Now%28%29%2C+&shoupgrds=Show+Upgrades Other World Computing is the first place I look for upgrades.

Thanks, guys. Emac it is. I just needed some reassurance from you experts. I'm with you, Tom, on buying straight from Mac. Think I'll go to the Mac store in my area and encourage them to stick around. I'll just have to be careful when I open the trunk of my car this time.
And, good advice on the RAM upgrade. Might as well do that now, too.

Wow!!! Not exactly a lightweight portable. What do your clients say?

I have an eMac too. Great value, works like a charm with the FinePix software in OSX, same as usual in OS9 (classic mode). Load it up with RAM and you'll be happy. Nice screen too.

I leave mine on a desk and take a G3 PowerBook on location. :-):)

My clients just say WOW! But only because they don't have to cart it around. My case is on wheels so that help, and I only use it when I have an assistant. I still dread the stairs. I do still use a powerbook whenever I can, especially with the S2. I just get tired of reassuring clients that their image looks good. They just have to look at the laptop straight on.

I am very happy with my eMac. Wish I'd waited a couple weeks for the price to drop, but oh well.
I played on my friend's new iMac over the weekend and was not that impressed by her LCD screen, and the base is much bigger than I pictured. Doesn't save all that much desk space. Anyway, I'm glad to report no jealousy here, love the emac and the money I saved.
I haven't loaded Finepix software yet, but the iphoto is working fine for now. The software manual does not list eMac's as compatable, so I was hesitant. Glad to read it works well. I think I'll now go waste some more work time reading about Finepix vs. other organizational software.
Sorry to say nothing...trying not to be a silent participant :)

Hi all,

I'm coming a bit late into this topic, but I am considering an eMac as well.

Is it fast enough for Photshop work???

I'm coming from the Windows world, so bare with me ;-)

Morten

Yes. Mhz for Mhz, Mac's are faster for most things. In my opinion, Macs are easier to use, which makes you faster as well. The low cost, high power, CRT screen quality, all-in-one form factor, etc. make this computer a great deal. If I were to buy another computer, it would be a eMac or, given a bunch more money, a G5 ($$$).
