View Full Version : AC Charger

US Domestic versions of the S2Pro ship with an AC Adapter that can be used to power the S2Pro from mains voltage. This is handy if you are doing some extended studio photography or want uninterrupted power while you are connected to your PC, or if you want to clean your CCD.
This adapter is rather expensive when purchased as an accessory. So if you buy a grey market camera, be sure you know what you get with it!
WARNING: Whenever you use your AC adapter, be sure to remove the CR123 batteries from the housing or they will be discharged by the charging circuit! Don't forget to put them back when you're done!

I got my camera without the ac adapter. I bought it in Saudi Arabia. (That is where i live.) for abt US$ 2700/- and the local dealer tried to rip me by reducing the warranty period to six months claiming the manufacturer only offers six months.
I had to fight with them from the sales man up to the General manager to get the additional six.
I bought the ac adpater as an option for abt US$ 40/-
Should i remove the AA also or just 123 ?

As far as I can tell there is no need to remove the AA batteries when using the AC adapter. According to the manual - the CR123A lithium batteries should be removed when using the AC adapter. I suspect that Memobug is correct that the batteries will discharge. The lithium batteries are IMHO the worst thing about this camera and if you can work without them (since all they run is the on board flash) you are well advised to do so.
BTW, I had to buy my adapter as an accessory here in Canada, it cost around cdn$45. I don't think that price is too bad since the AC adapter for my Olympus E10 cost cdn$79, although the retailer I dealt with reduced that somewhat.
Enjoy your camera!

I tried a 5V 2A standard power adapter but it doesn't work without the main camera batteries (CR123A). It only allows me to leave the the digital batteries (4 AA's) out. Is the S2 power adapter special?

I just tried my camera with the AC adapter and NO batteries at all (both CRs and all AA's out of the body). It works just fine. Must have something to do with the adapter you have.

I tried both 5V and 6V DC power adapters with the CR123's and MB16. I also tried 5V and 6V battery packs connected to the DC in.
5V = requires CR123's or MB16
6V = shows error

CR123's still used = required?

To the best of my knowledge, the only thing that will NOT work with the CR123s out of the camera is the on board flash. This is independant of the AC adapter since the AC adapter doesn't run this function at any time. Unless you make use of the on board flash, I would reccomend that you remove the CR123s altogether. The CR123 batteries may run other functions, but both the AC adapter and the AA batteries will also run these functions, so really the CR123 batteries are only useful if the flash is required.
Back to Memobugs point about the discharging of the CR123s, I agree that the manual seems not to support his warning. That text is identical in my Canadian version.

So, what are the specs on the Fuji AC adapter, and does anyone have a clue why the official one is so expensive at places like B&H?

I don't know the price in Usa.
In UK the price for the original Fuji/AC adapter is £29.90 at Jessops

The Actual specs on the label are:
Input: AC100-240V~50/60Hz 14W
Output: DC5V 2A
Center pin positive
Anything that puts out the 5V DC with a 2 Amp capability should work fine, as long as the plug is the right size. This one that came with my S2 is auto switching for USA and "Europe", but the after market one that you purchase doesn't have to be, as long as the input voltage is the right one for where you're located.

Why is this thread so slow? I can't be the only one with this problem. I have tried two brands of 5V power adapters and I have made both Ni-MH and Li-Ion 5V battery packs to connect to the DC-in. They all require my CR123's sockets to be powered.

I checked with a friend who has a S2 and with a rental shop to see if their cameras work like mine does. In both cases the CR123 batteries, in or out, make no difference to how the AC adapter functions. (This is how my camera works) I suggest a call to Fuji, perhaps they can shed some light on your situation.

Maybe the sensor inside is stuck. Have you tried taking the 123's out and just using the AA's? There is a sensor inside the 123 compartment that tells the camera whether or not they're in there or not.

I tried clicking "my" CR123 sensors with my finger but no luck. I stated in another thread that there is a noticeable difference in "my" S2 with the CR123's in or out while "my" S2 is turned off.
With CR123's:
1. Top LCD has two horizontal lines - the same ones to separate the status info when the S2 is turned on.
2. Viewfinder is bright and clear with focusing areas and grid display.
Without:
1. Top LCD is blank.
2. Viewfinder is blurry and no focusing areas or grid.
In this case, how can "my" S2 operate without the CR123's?
Note: I think "my" S2 is different from "the" S2.

Sounds like the camera needs to be put in the shop and looked at then...

Hello,
I think I have the answer for the battery discussion, concerning the CR123 removal.
The reason Thad you have to REMOVE the CR123 batt. Is AFTER A WHILE THE can explode. Thad is because the AC Adapter is linked to the CR123 system, and he is attempting to load the CR123 battery’s. When you use the MB16 there is no problem, because the AA`s are rechargeable.
This answer is coming from a electrical engineer.
Hope this helps.

I tried my S2 with a "generic" AC adapter, 5V, 2A. Initially, a-ok. Took out the 123's. Still fine. Took out the AA's, and the back LCD went out. Then I jiggled the plug, and cycled the on/off switch, and everything came on again.
So, either you're right: your s2 is wonky, or try wiggling the plug and power-cycling the camera after jiggling.

Can you tell me the name of the store you got your AC adapter from?
Thanks

I got mine from Downtown Camera.
But you could also try Headshots or Henrys too.

Henrey’s selling for around $70.00. I will look at Downtown Camera since I live about 5 blocks away.

Eddie,
While I didn't see a price online, you could email or phone Headshots for a quote.
