There is a saying that you could only drop a microdrive half a time.
If FUJI made a microdrive for their cameras, and gave it a life time replacement guarrantee, I still would not get one. If I had to chose between a 1 gig CF or a 4 Gig, 2 Gig or 3 1-Gig microdrives, I would get the 1 Gig CF card.
In my limited but painful experience, microdrives will eventually fail and fail misserably. I would not get a microdrive even if I never took it out of the camera and downloaded the files directly from the camera.
All of my friends who have had one, have been seriously let down and their images lost from a microdrive. I believe even IBM stopped supporting the retrieval of images and replacement of their drives when their microdrives fail...and fail they will. Unless there is a super dooper, new and improved technology in Drives and has been tested by my grandkids when they celebrate the new year 2050 and passed their test, I would not consider them

I hope I sugar coated it enough.
When it comes to Microdrives...just say no.
That's my opinion. I leave it to the many, many fine members of this board...to correct me or express their opinions.

Gil

I have 6 (3 sets) of rechargable Li-Ion CR123 manufactured by Ultralast. They work well, not great. The disposable ones tend to last a bit longer, but these rechargables do a good job on one day outings, one full wedding or to simply play arround. I still kepp a couple of sets of disposable CR123's for loger days shooting or if I will be away without my charger. i would advise you not to recharge disposables...just in case.
I am glad you found this site. You will soon feel like home, if not already. I hope you enjoy your S2 as much as i obsessed over mine. it's an unhealthy relationship!

You will be off to a great start with the S2. I can't think of a better value for somebody's first DSLR. Sure, there a many great and even better DSLR cameras out there, but the S2 will always be respected and held as an industry's finest.
Cheers! :righton:

Rather than start a new thread I thought I would tag my question on here.

Does a solid state alternative exist that fits in the S2 microdrive slot? If so what is it called?

Do the Smartmedia cards that fit the S2 come in sizes bigger than 128mb and if so can the camera cope with them? If they do exist and work, where do I find these cards in the UK? Biggest I found on Ebay seem to be 128mb.

Edited: -Maybe I am being thick, Is a Compact Flash Card a card that fits the Micro Drive slot? If so is there just one type? The number of memory cards on the market at the moment is bewildering.

""\Another great design elements on the S2 is the memory card slot, which accommodates both CompactFlash Type I and II as well as SmartMedia memory cards. This definitely increases your memory card options, and enables you to use the IBM MicroDrive CompactFlash cards, now available in sizes as large as 1 gigabyte." :hitother:
