With the above combination I cannot set my flash to ttl-auto. The flash does not work properly, does not takes a looong time to recycle and the photos are terrible.
A friend has the S2 and a 28 flash. My flash works on his camera, his not on mine. Tried various lenses to no avail. All our settings seem to be the same, even 2-button reset mine, again to no avail.
Any suggestions? Seems to be either a camera setting or malfunction.

Dan,
Welcome to the forums!
TTL on the S2 is usually so dysfunctional, you should not trust it. You probably will have better luck using the flash (any flash) in Manual or maybe Auto mode - but never TTL.
There have been several exhaustive threads in this forum about the poor showing TTL has on the S2. Do a search for "TTL" and "FLASH" and "S2" for some comments, and even some test demonstrations with plenty of images showing how TTL does not work or is so inconsistent that it should not be trusted.
That said, there are still plenty of photographers here that use the S2 to shoot weddings because of the S2's hard-to-beat tonality and success with flesh tones. They use flash, but I guarantee they aren't using TTL mode.

I'll add to what Tom mentioned, I use the S2 with a Metz CT45 only in manual mode.
P.S Welcome to the forum

I used my S2 all the time with a Sunpak 555 with an old Nikon ttl off camera cable and another smaller sunpak and got excellent results, in fact better than when I borrowed a Nikon SB 28 or what ever model my Nikon buddy was talking about that was so good on his camera's. Never had any problems at all using ttl flash mode.
