Based on feedback from Rich (Arizona Rich), and Dimitris ... and from positive reviews on various other forums, I 'broke down' and picked up the Nikon 18-200 VR today, for use on my S2. (I'll spare you the decision process on whether or not I 'needed' this lens .... or if I had 'lens envy' .... or how I could justify the expense ....given that I have other lenses covering this range). I've only had the lens a few hours, so I really wouldn't call this an official 'test' yet (haven't looked at edge sharpnes, etc) ... my first trials were just to make sure that I could get reasonably good results with it! I'll give more detailed, in-depth analysis when I have time. My initial impressions are very positive. Here's a few 'test' pics .... just shooting some shots without really worrying too much about composition. They were shot in Raw, converted (converted with C1 at 300 ppi) .... the 100 percent crops were left at 300ppi, the others were downsized at 100ppi. I didn't play with the VR much, I just left it on. I'll run a series of VR, noVR tests later. Shots were at either ISO 160 or 200.
These 3 shots ..... 1st one is 18mm, 2nd at 200mm, and the 3rd is 100 percent crop. Notice the small sign at the base of the middle tree in the first shot .... I was probably about 50 feet from it.
I'll post a couple more in the next message.
