Just curious, does anybody use other image editing software, except for Photoshop? The word "PS" seems to be as popular on this forum as S2 :)

I myself hate PS and use it very rarely. It's like driving a tank across the beatiful medow... I use the Micrografx PicturePublisher, which is exceptionally light, yet powerful package. Anybody else uses it?

I am Mac based but software is basically the same. If you need top of the range graphics editing then Photoshop it has to be, If you only need limited functions like sharpening and genral colour change then paint shop pro or photoshop elements is ok.
The main thing is chose the application you are happy at using and that gives you the results you need.

Igor,

I too use Picture Publisher on occasion. I use Photoshop because it's easier for me to do advanced (yeah - sure! Well, they're advanced to ME!) functions than it is on PP. PP is definitly an easy quick program to use for minor editing and resizing, but PS does things much nicer when you need to do more. Don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing PP. :) I use both and will continue to use both.

Don't take my words as bragging, but one of my main jobs is book illustrating (mostly technical). I have two books published in Germany under my belt and both were illustrated solely in PicturePublisher which works fine with my Wacom Cintiq 18 system.
You know, book illustrating can't be called easy or not advanced job, so I can't agree the PP is more weak than PS.

In fact the Corel Photopaint program is an excellent alternative to Photoshop. Each program has its strong points but both will get you to the same destination. I have used Corel products so long that I once called for technical support and spoke to Charlie Corel. (The last sentence is not true but I thought Sandman would enjoy it.)

Man Wayne... First Peter, now Charlie. You get around! I've been using Norton's products since Norton Commander first came out. I still use the remake of it (Windows Commander) for my file management plus other things.

Would you believe that I still remember using Edline, and I could do just about anything with dBase III.

I still have an old CPM portable machine hanging around - complete with Wordstar!

BTW, you can download CPM and Wordstar:

I went to middle and high school with Morris Chestnut. He starred in Boys in the Hood, Under Seige II (Steven Segal), Like Mike and a few others... There. I can't drop any more names, I don't think, without losing my job though. All of those guys remain anonymous for the most part.

Swampy, how can I move this thread to "Anything goes" ? :)

Igor ,you're dead right, and it's something i thought about half way through my post.
I proposed 'anything goes' to avoid just this sort of thing, but these threads have a life of their own, and DO ramble in all directions, they don't do much harm and normally get back on track pretty soon .

But above all the're fun.

I go back and forth between PS and Picture Window Pro. It is worth a looksee. It has some powerful color correction tools. I like its eyedropper tool that can color correct based on a highlight, shadow, or in between gray tone. Hopefully someone will come along and tell me I am a blinkin' idiot for not finding the whazit control in the whozit panel in PS, that does the same thing.

Dear swampy
I still use Norton Commander, It still does a great job to manage the files around.

Igor,
About photo processing, there are a lot of advanced programs to use, but Photoshop is widerly accepted and you could easily find someone to share your experience.

Linh,
I agree with you : it's only a matter of Adobe's better marketing.

You don't still use "Norton Commander" do you? Or are you using "Windows Commander" or it's second new name "Total Commander"?

I'm using Total Commander and it rocks. Here's the website for it: http://www.ghisler.com/

Why not using Norton Commander? I still use it too , a great file manager for DOS.

Exactly. Great for DOS. I am unaware of a version for Windows. Total Commander is a knock off of Norton Commander. Everything that was in Norton is in Total and so much more. Just being able to handle the long file names is a major plus, but you've got so much more. I'd suggest you try out the unrestricted demo if you're still using Norton Commander in DOS. You'll be much happier I think.

You can't handle ALL files under Windows, right? But still can under DOS, that's where NC comes handy. Of course, there are tons of similar s/w, just NC is a sweet nostalgy thing, that's just pleasant and fun to use :)

Don't know what files in DOS you'd need to handle that you couldn't in Windows with Windows/Total Commander... What are you doing?

I've never missed NC when I moved over to this one. I just had some getting used to with the long file names back then. Windows 95. hehe. Wow. I don't think Windows Commander came around until Windows 98 though I think.

You can't handle files that are "currently used by Windows". E.g. when you need to backup some system files, etc.

Dear Swampy,

I use Norton Commander version 2.01.000, It used to be for Windows 98, 98 SE, ME. I still use with Windows 2000, Windows XP and it still works great.
In Windows, you could have a "Norton classic" interface with a blue double windows or new custom (color, font..) windows interface.
I think that Norton Commander 2000 is the lastest version in the family.

In time of DOS, I used to use another great sofware from Symantech was Norton Utilities for optimizing and fixing our comps which worked like System Mechanic nowaday, but after another upgrade from Windows 95 to 98, I think it's gone.

Linh,
I still have that big box of Norton Utilities! :) Your right that was a great package!

Ahh, they don't make it very easy to find it, but I didn't know NC went 32 bit windows.

I find that the files that are open by windows when copying files are files I don't need in my back ups. But I do my system different using a file server with offline files basically. My desktop, favorites, my documents, most of my stuff is saved on the server. Either can go and I'll still have a copy to take somewhere else. I've created install packages for all the software I really use and I'm pretty proficient at installing operating systems/patches, etc. Usually, 60-80 minutes and I've got a rebuilt system if need be.

I like Canvas from ACD See, (formerly Deneba Software). Does nearly everything PS does but includes combination raster and vector imaging. You can design the entire page from image to copy, etc., etc., with one program. No more editing the image in PS and then importing to PageMaker, Illustrator, Corel, or anything else.

You may want to check out the free trial DL.

Your making me feel better in that only about three months ago I threw out my old CPM, along with my well worn Wordstar listing of control commands... Also, threw out my early DOS Wordstar manuals.

re photo software: I use Ulead's PhotoImpact. More a matter of what I am used to using & tend to do limited editing.
Every now & then I try to play with the Elements that came with the S2, mostly for the layering. But, at this point I'm just not willing to read much in the way of manuals on photo editing--though I'm more than happy to read volumes on most other aspects of photography...
