Picture orientation works inconsistently.

Does anybody know the principles of working of the picture orientation mechanism? When I shoot vertical pictures not all of them are rotated properly. Do you also have this problem? Maybe there is some mechanism inside and when I tilt the camera to a vertical position, I do it in a too delicate manner and the camera doesn't sense the differenece.

I do not use vertical display in the camrea LCD but when I download lots of pictures it is really annoying to see that plenty of them are not rotated. My camera is a D200
