I really need to upgrade my old Monitor but wouldn't know where to start. I guess I can go to approx 3-£400.. I was looking at Sony's SDM or HMF range.
Any idea's would be appreciated.

Steve, finally I got yesterday a SONY SDM HS95 monitor for 399 Euros, first impressions are preety good.
Very sharp -much sharper than my previous Hitachi 721 CRT monitor- very bright and relaxing view. Built quality is very high.
I have to calibrate it now and get used to it, because I can see too much detail in the shadows I couldn't before, although the black is very black :woot:
I was looking for the EIZO S1910 but it costs 250 euros more and I couldn't see any differences at all (they may be a few but who cares?)

Thanks Billy,
I was also thinking about getting hold of a Lacia Electron 19", second hand as they no longer make these old monitors any longer..

Seems like you could find one of those 19" CRT IV Lacies, just bought mine last year sometime from Lacie, have to look the month up. I didn't know they were going to stop production of all CRT's at the time, just got lucky. You checked out e-bay Steve? Best to you for finding one... :)

Yes I have checked Ebay Dave and indeed there are a few for sale.. Trouble is most are up to five years old and I dont know what kind of shelf life one could expect. I understand after a while it becomes difficult to calibrate older monitors.

Understand...as long as "shelf life" is just sitting on a shelf and not being used or turned on it should be good, but thats probably not the case. :(
As I said I bought from the factory and the model IV was the latest that I know of, but there were a few III's out there (e-bay)at the same time. The IV's came with a three yr. warranty if that helps. :)

Steve,I should never got a monitor older than 6 months. It's a kind difficult for a Lacie to be "on shelf", it's a monitor workhouse and hard to be turned off all day long.
Have a look at Samsung, they have Mitsubishi tubes and good prices.

Telephone Hemplan on 01452 730015, explain that you're serious and exactly why you need a good monitor - they will find you a great bargain ASAP.

I have LaCie monitors. My first one was a 22" ( model # ?), and I used it with the LaCie Blue Eye calibrator. It was nice. I then bought a LaCie 19" III for another computer. When the 22" was about 2.5 years old (heavy use, lit 90 hours per week), it started to get dimmer and got to the point where I couldn't calibrate it. The warranty hadn't expired, so I sent the 22" back to Lacie, and got a 22" IV in return.
That was 2 years ago. Both monitors are doing fine with very heavy use.
To keep them calibrated with Mac OS X, I bought a Monaco Optix-xr Pro. It works great, and can calibrate LCDs as well.
Now my alter-ego, Mobius Entwine, has bought two more used LaCie 22" CRTs off ebay in the last week. One is a III ($432) and the other is a "no number" ($300) that reportedly only was used a couple times per week. I (we) will see how good they are.
I saw some LaCie 19" CRTs sell for $700! :woot:

Steve if 19" is big enough then you could buy eBay Item number: 8767253130 (New!) and have change left for another lens......
