How about this one. Why don't we see what age groups are around here. I mean, I did this in my car club, and it was interesting that probably 60% of the owners of the car I drive are over 50, but we had ages from 16 through 74 driving them.

good idea swampy, but i would be better if it was with your avatar, along with your location, (still to many blank locations)

ps i've voted

Swampy

I agree - too many blank locations. The Age thing, well, take a guess based on thier avatar picture (if there is one), some people may not want thier age known. When you get your age, I guess it doesn't matter though, right? Just kidding.

I guess what I'll start doing is, when ever I see someone post that has a blank location, I'll post in that thread for them to go add thier location at least.

Then - I'm reading that has been viewed 24 times - yet there's only 6 people that have added thier age group??? Ok you 5 people, quit looking in here for a few days unless there's a new post!

Swampy, this is a low blow. After I confess to having not updated my picture because I'm feeling old and ugly, you make me vote my age in a poll where there are no others yet reported in my category!

Tom

Swampy
August 28th, 2003, 05:23 PM
hehe. You didn't have to vote YET. You could have waited until someone else that was in your age group posted. Heck, with only you and Sandman posting, no one would have guessed your age by the votes. You gave it away yourself! You could have easily gotten away with the one person (so far) that's in the 41-50, or one of the 3 people that's in the 51-60... Unless you're really complaining about your age and you ARE the one person in the 41-50 that's voted. :)

Don't feel bad AT all. The 74 year old that's in my car club, he goes to all the car club meets. Lives up north past San Francisco, Goes to Vegas, Detroit, PA, FL, All of them. He gets mad at his car because his model (not the performance one) has a speed limiter and he's always saying that his car will not, uphill, downhill, whatever circumstance, go past 118 miles an hour. SEVENTY-FOUR!!!

There you go then swampy, not all of us are past it , might be 55 but my mind and sometimes body ,still a teenager. i,m pretty fit , lift weights, generally jump up and down of truck bodys . no good at running though , knees gone after playing too much soccer.
Come on Tom if you chase bears and manage to walk around Alaska, you must be fit too.

Hi there,

Just thought I would support the youngest of the group, yet...
So now there 2 people on 22 - 30.

Sorry, I would have liked to help you out Tom, but you'll have to wait a couple of years ok?

I liked the idea of us putting our real faces on the board, so this is our next step then?... Maybe they can make a couple of registration fields required?

But cheers for all of you that do have their real picture, location and age filled in!

I'll send you all a picture on my birthday, kind of like a digital cake for you all! :)

Well, just done my bit to make it look a bit like a gaussian distribution - as one of the generation that watched live as Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moon :-)

I can understand why some may be reluctant to divulge location - I'm a bit wary shall we say, hence the vague location for me.

And as the quote says... growing old is compulsory, growing up is optional...

I was talking about the 15-21!

Seriously, I'm 61. Just got lucky in that my hair didn't turn gray. Good genetics.

The age talk makes me wonder whether those...shall we say "younger"...members of the crew had different photo experiences growing into the hobby or profession. When I got my first 35mm, it was an Argus C3, and the idea of auto-anything was years in the future. I then had a Graphic 35, then a Canon FT, then a Nikon FA, then an N70 and N80, and then the S2. Looking back, I wonder how I was ever able to set shutter speed, set aperture, focus, and get a picture of anything at all!

I can't really remember what "auto-assists" were about during my years of film - I always stuck stoically to manual only cameras - Zenith TTL, Yashica FX2 and FX3, Rollei B35 - a brace of, shall we say, not expensive cameras ! :-). Many a shot was lost through not being ready but then using the various pre-set techniques kept you in the right ball park.

One reason I got the S2 was to get back to the familiar SLR - don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoy using the other Fuji digi-cams I've got with the auto everything front ends - but I do find myself using the S2 in manual focus and exposure ( even down to preferring centre-weighted metering ) - and the little things like depth of field preview and threaded shutter release button !

Bit of a luddite in that respect I suppose :-))

But at least with the S2, you get the luxurious choice of how you want to work.

Tom Nolle
August 29th, 2003, 06:31 AM
Gee, Smunky, that brings back memories! I had an old used Rolleicord and a Ricoh twin-lens that I did some glamor shooting with in the '70s. I gave them up when I moved to travel/wildlife--too hard to set up manual cameras in the field.

Keith, I agree with your comments on the control of the S2 versus point-and-shoot consumers, but I think the S2 also offers benefits over even professional 35mms. One big reason to use simple settings with automatic reactions is that you can't be sure the shot will be right if you diddle on your own. With the S2 you can preview different exposures and settings and keep refining things till you get them right. That can create a better shot, and also a better shooter over time.

I used to shoot a hand me down Rollei occasionally. I started out with an old Canon, but I can't remember the model. Manual everything. My dad brought it to the US when he moved here and I ended up learning on it. The picture below, circa 1950, is my dad in his country with that camera though. Then I moved the the Canon A-1, which was still manual focus. I took some wonderful pics with that camera.

There's an intense expression, Swampy!

Has anyone here done much underwater photography? I used to dive regularly, and still dive occasionally, and I've used the Nikonos V for years, with an Ikelite strobe. I toyed with trying to find an S2 housing, but I'm more into cold-weather travel now so I'm not sure I'd get my money's worth.

By the way, I have a 1993 Lincoln Mark VIII that probably has 33k miles on it, and I've never driven the thing over 85 mph. Maybe I have to add on a few more years....

You know, we should have saved Smunky's old avatar. With the one vertical slice of face in it, and with the top of the head in this one, I'm sure we could have built a composite Smunky!

Great picture...I love the old b&w. If I did shoots my way, I would take 80% in b&w...even at weddings. But, you have to do what the client wants.

I'll try to add my photo later today. Have a Great Day!!

Eek, I have a newer model car and I drive over 85 mph daily :)
Nice picture Bryan, I maintain my position that you look like your dad.
People like it when I use my old Rollei for portraits, it gives a certain quality to the shoot.
Tom:
You might want to look into the new little Sony U20 camera that comes in waterproof housing, specifically for diving.
I think its like 260.00

I'm drawing a blank on the Sony reference, Smunky. I can see a U60 that's good to about 5 feet under water, and a P-series housing that's good to about 40 meters, but nothing specific about a U20. Can you give me a URL or reference? It's not so much that I'd want to replace my Nikonos (though shooting film again gives me the jitters), but that it might be handy to have something like that for wet trips, where I couldn't risk exposing the S2 (kayacking, for example).

I've seen my share of rain here in NJ this summer, too. I think that, for a Yellowstone trip next year, I'm going to invest in a rain cover for the S2 and the Sigma 500mm. I've really been lucky on trips that I've not run into so much rain that I was risking the camera to take shots. I did have a kayak lake trip in Alaska scheduled while I was on a small ship cruise there in 2002, and I'd planned to take a dry bag for the camera (N80 in those days) but the trip was cancelled.

What do you guys do with rain? (no funky responses, please, like "drink it" "take a bath", "dilute bourbon", etc.)

Tom

August 29th, 2003, 08:53 AM
Sing? lol.

I haven't used it in heavy rain, only real light drizzle. I have a small towel that I just drape over it. Not much help there, I know.

I guess I do look like my dad in a way Smunky... I think it's still split though, unevenly... 40/60 towards my mom's side.

Tom... I'm a SCUBA diver and I definitely won't risk my S2 unless I get me one of those Ikelite or Sea&Sea housings that cost almost the same as the camera including strobes and U/W lense and etc.
On dive trips, river rafting, snorkeling or events that require getting wet, I got a Canon s400 elph digicam with an underwater housing "also by canon" waterproof to 120feet to give me flexibility and enough pixels to still enjoy digital photography.
There are other good digital models too under the Sea&Sea and Sealife brands. Check diversdirect.com for U/W digital cameras.

Cheers!

I'm fairly sure that life doesn't begin at 40. As I look back on my before 40 years, if it got any more exciting, interesting, dangerous, ...... .I don't know that I could handle it anymore. I'm kinda glad things have slowed down to a dull roar.

Tom Nolle

I don't know, JR. I think I'd have to say on reflection that my life did sort of begin at 40!

They say that "old age" is the point where you, on looking back, see more things you're afraid of losing than you see, looking forward, that you could hope to gain! Of course I'm still puzzling out the syntax on that one.

Tom

CaptJR

Tom, are you specifically refering to 'your youth'? Actually, on looking back at this point, I'm not afraid of losing it, it's already lost. And there's not much chance of getting it back either.:(

Kinda sad voting turnout so far. After a week, only 40 votes, from over 1000 registered users. Maybe Shawn will need to prune the userbase to give us a more realistic number of how many "current" users there are. Although my personal forum is not anywhere close to this size, I still prune my users out from 6 months of no activity... Then, I also know there are a certain percentage of registered users who shouldn't vote because they're just here reading about the S2 and not actually owners. :)

Yes i think you've hit the nail on the head ,there Bryan, maybe 1000+ members but only 50? (a guess) regular contributers. A lot proberbly just dip in to watch ,or aire their view once , and either sit in background, or just disappear. it's disapointing, but human nature.
I remember when i first posted , i was nervous, unsure of the reaction both my comments and pics would get.Look at me now , nearly 300 posts , can't stop talking. Thats what i mean ,human nature will come out, there are both introverts , and extroverts ,out there. right i'll shut up now and quitely disappear.

P.S if' 'hitting the nail on the head'' does'nt translate, it means you've got it dead right.

I'm so old that I bought (and could afford to buy) a new Nikon S-1 when I was in high school, and Fuji was just the name of a mountain in Japan. And, no I didn't know George Eastman personally.

Hey Tom, looks like I have a couple of years on you and also go back further with the Nikonos to the model II. It has seen some underwater use, but mostly it accompanies me on sailing outings to remind me of the sunny 16 rule (we don't need no stinkin' meter!).

OK, my camera lineage began with my Dad's Argus C3, then moved on to an Exacta VX-IIa - the single most exciting purchase of my life - used in conjuction with a Norwood director incident meter that always got it right, (until it got dropped for the fifth time) then on to a Nikon FE after a brief and unfortunate relationship with a Miranda Sensorex. The FE, although a beloved instrument, got drawered when the N90 showed up, and it in turn has been somewhat shoved aside, except perhaps for occasional flings with E6 films, by the S2. Well, I have to admit to also being involved with a Mamiya C330 (interchangeable!) twin lens and even a 4x5 on occasion.

Bryan, I have voted, but i missed the thread, so i've made it up now. One thing i'm not sure of is with so little active users on the site compared to the 1,000 registered what would you do about making all members aware about the calendar concept.
