After a 'phone call to Fujifilm UK's Service Dept I had to send my S2 back to Fuji as there is a bright green dot on every image. It was returned very quickly, only away for three days- the good news! Fuji UK say that there is nothing wrong with the camera and there was no mention of the green dot, despite my sending along images with it. The green dot is still present on the camera's return. I would not expect this with a £2000 camera and have written a letter to Fuji asking for a better explanation. I await with interest!

I know that I can remove the dot with a software package, but I do not really accept this.

Is there any way a memory card could induce such a defect?

Probably not, but worth trying a different card as a test.

UNLESS - you see it with no card at all when you zoom in, Then, of course FUJItech might be blind.

Matt.

Have you tried shooting with no card installed? the S2 will let you and you can even zoom in, pan and check focus and so forth

The default seems to be to enable Test Shots, but it looks like you can turn this function of in one of the menus

Matt

I have tried another card. The fault is still there. I suspect that there is a faulty pixel on the CCD.

I would keep hounding Fuji. That pixel is unacceptable. It would be an expensive repair to replace the whole sensor, and Fuji would rather you get used to the green pixel. Start writing letters and providing samples.

You could even tell them exactly where the pixel is. Take a full size image and crop it from the upper left corner down and across to the green pixel. Look at the resulting image size and it will tell you how far over and how far down the fault (in the lower right corner) is.

Keep on them! Demand better service.

Thanks Tom,

I sent images with your suggested crops and highlighted the dot in the full size images on a CD with the camera the first time. I've since written again with the same CD enclosed and told Fuji that I wasn't happy. Will have to wait and see. Other than the green dot I am absolutely delighted with the S2. Getting beautiful results with a Nikon 18-35.

I think they (Fuji) can map out or turn off the bad pixel. I remember when I had my first Nikon 990 there was a lot of talk about doing that --at least Nikon could...

Thanks,

I'm still waiting to hear from Fuji UK. That's a week now.

My supplier says that they will replace the camera for me if Fuji don't do anything.

WOW ! If they will replace the camera for you then that's a great dealer. Or you have dropped a lot of money in that store over the years.....
Good luck either way !

Thanks Don,

I have spent a fair bit with them over the years and have found them excellent to deal with. I had a Fuji 6900 which packed in after a few days. No return to Fuji, they immediately replaced it for me. By the way they are warehouseexpress.com. They also are very well priced.

Acroxford,

Please realize that you will read the worst about any product on the web. This is where people come to gripe about problems, to troubleshoot, and to straighten out what they don't understand. You will learn about the rare problems and the goofy characteristics that bug a tiny minority of users. If you went to a Nikon forum, or a Canon forum, or a Jaguar forum, or a Dodge Van (transmission failure) forum, you might be discouraged from ever buying their products. The complaints all represent a miniscule proportion of the users that have found a place to voice their opinions. Often when one unit has a problem, the owner will retell that problem over and over, making it seem like everyone has that problem.

Most people don't have problems, and most people don't go online to write that everything is okay.

I have owned three different Nikon CoolPix digital cameras over the past 4 years. I have heard countless stories on websites and thru the grapevine (friend of a guy who knows somebody’s uncle...) about how the pivot falls apart on them. I have even seen one with a loose pivot at the camera store (displayed there for months). It sounded like I should expect my CoolPixes to fall apart at any time. I never had a problem with them. So maybe 2 cameras out of 100 has a problem. On the web you will read about those 2 cameras in 25 different posts. The 98 people that have no problem will probably say so about 4 times (total), which leads to a misrepresentation of the apparent frequency of the problems.

I think the S2 is a fine camera, and is a great value. I would not be put off by reports of camera problems you read about on the web - unless EVERYBODY is reporting it. (Like the crappy transmission in a Dodge van). I bought an S2 and passed on the Dodge van - and am happy about both.

Never believe what you read. - except this.

Third letter now off to Fujifilm UK. Won't be holding my breath!!

Iain

P.S. For anyone put off buying an S2 by my experience with Fujifilm UK, don't be. My camera is probaly in a tiny minority. It is a lovely piece of kit which gives stunning results. I've just been unlucky I think.

Its not the camera s... happens... Its the lack of service on fujis part that bothers me... Just because others may act that way doesn't make it ok for fuji to...

Got a reply from Fujifilm UK today. They advise me that the Industry Standard for duff pixels on a CCD is, wait for it - 3!!

Thank goodness for Warehouse Express's excellent service.

I have recently upgraded from an S1 to an S2. I was extremely happy with the S1 and I am now regreting buying the S2 at all.

I have been experiencing focus/sharpness problems. Perhaps you could shine some light on the problem for me.

My images on the S1 were always pin sharp with STANDARD setting and I was using the S2 on the same middle setting but getting unsharp results. I too contacted Fuji UK who said that they have made the S2 less sharp because wedding photographers were saying the S1 was too sharp!

Fuji recommend setting the camera to HARD and to add 150% 2 & 2 USM in PS. I think this is unacceptable. I also think that the camera may be focusing beyond the subject. I did a P.R. Shoot yesterday and the guy speaking was standing in front of some curtains and the camera focused on the curatains!

What are your thoughts or comments?

Cheers

David
