Here's my first digital bird and I'm impressed with the S2. The detail on the (original file) heron is incredible, 20" x 30" print looks very good. Lens specs: 800mm Nikkor with Nikon 1.4x teleconverter, when combined with smaller digital image = effective 1,680mm lens. Shot as high quality jpeg. Manual settings, f5.6 @ 1/1000, 800 ISO. Location: Netarts, Oregon.

Very nice!
What kind of tripod did you use to steady that virtual Hubble?
I have wanted to shoot some birds, now that my 400mm acts like a 600mm, but... I haven't seen a bird in my yard in a few weeks - except for the dead Blue Jay in the backyard. Usually there are robins, jays, black birds, flickers, cardinals, wrens, etc. It is an unsettling situation that may be caused by the West Nile Virus and the pesticides that are killing the birds and their food supply.
The attached image loaded very quickly, considering its size and compared to other smaller, slower images. How was that attachement saved? Size & jpg compression?

Tom:
Tripod is the big "Gitzo" with an "Arca/Swiss" Monoball head, and a "Really Right Stuff" plate designed specifically for the 800mm lens. This is a very slick combination that sets up including camera and lens mounted in less than a minute.
Image saved out of PhotoShop with the "save for web" function at 72 dpi after reducing to 800 pix wide.
