"Nikon Inc. is asking your cooperation in connection with a voluntary recall of certain lot numbers of its Nikon Model EN-EL3 rechargeable lithium ion battery packs. The battery pack can experience a short circuit causing it to overheat and possibly melt, posing a potential hazard to consumers. There have only been four confirmed reports of incidents of the problem worldwide, and while no injuries have taken place, Nikon Inc. has initiated this recall of the affected lot numbers as a reflection of its commitment to safety and product quality. We are asking that owners of the affected battery packs return them to Nikon Inc. for a free replacement." :)

"The Nikon EN-EL3 battery pack is provided as a supplied accessory with the purchase of Nikon's digital SLR D100, D70, and D50 cameras. It is also sold separately at retail under Nikon's model number 26265. The EN-EL3 battery pack involved in this recall was first distributed by Nikon in May 2004 and is still being sold at retail."

View this and the model numbers (http://www.nikonusa.com/) affected under "Whats new/EN-EL3 Battery Recall" popup window.

Nikon Canada has issued a similar recall. As I had an affected battery, I sent it back. In four days I had a new EN-EL3a at my door. Pickup and delivery paid for by Nikon. I think that this is very good service, and it reaffirms my faith in Nikon as a company. And after a charge, it does seem to work every bit as well as the old one.

Kudos to Nikon.

Cheers,
Adrian

Not so quick here in the UK it seems. Registered my partners battery when the notice appeared on the nikon-europe site last week but nothing yet. I only registered my battery on Monday this week so it's a bit soon for me to grizzle ( apart from the fact that it was supplied in the box, with my new camera - and the advice is to not use the affected batteries. So I bought an EN-EL3a there and then so I could play with my new toy ! :) )

End of grumble.

Keith.

Just had an email from Nikon-UK to say that replacement batteries are available and I will receive my pre-paid envelope in 5-10 days to return my bad battery !

We have progress :)
