It is a great photo! The reason I asked is that parts of it are *very* sharp (especially his glasses) and wondered if this came straight out of the camera.
I am always amazed by the 50mm/1.8 lens. It was my first (and only) lens and learned to shoot with it exclusively. I think all new photographers should get this gem and use it solely for a while... it will really get you thinking about composition. And for $US 100.00, the price is hard to beat (not to forget, it is one of Nikon's best/sharpest lenses too)!

Surprised you let them drink when they should be working

totally agreed w you that the 50mm is indeed a really sharp lens...
as for the pic, thanks for that kind comments... was actually trying to focus on his eye... the camera chose the frame of the specs instead:p

I would buy from these guys for anything camera related. Very good online experiences with them. Here's the link to the lens...

Again, don't know why they have two, I believe the cheaper one is an import and the other is the north American version.

IMHO, if the gray market lens (i.e. imported on the B&H site) is cheaper, go for it. It is not worth it to spend more for a USA Nikon lens at these price levels. I bought mine used from a local camera shop for about $US 60.00 - in perfect condition... maybe you could do the same.
Just my 0.02

Here's another shot with a Nikkor 50mm 1.8 but the dof was so short, it appears soft...which was my goal here.
1/60 -sec
f:2.0
ISO 200
handheld
natural light with white paper plate to reflect light back onto face.
a tripod would have sharpened that bottom lash some but it demonstates perfectly the short dof range with this lens at f.2. I'm not sure if I feel the nose if more prominent with this lens. I was about a foot away.
My understanding is the 50mm 1.4 may not be as sharp...but the bokeh is much better.

This is an excellent shot. And at 1-30/sec!! You're a rock! Mine are not this sharp at 1-30....because I try so hard to be steady, I shake!
I love the look of intense concentration...well captured!

Haha... thanks for the comments... generally, i am pretty wobbly...:p i think u r right, the more i try to be steady, the more wobbly i become. Hence, normally, i just concentrate on taking pics instead of worrying abt blur shots... i too was surprised that at 1/30, the shots turn out fine. Maybe i was leaning against a column... hmmm. cant remeber though...
I love ur shot on the girl... very interesting composition and her gaze... its really quite captivating... i bet u know her quite well to be able to take a shot like that.

dartz, buy the 1.8 !
I just sold my 1.4 and am very happy I retrieved my $200 I paid for it.
The 1.8 IS better, I made direct tests before selling.

thank you swampy...
after lot of reading
i think i'll buy that nikon "cheapo" 50mm f1.8D
i need fast and sharpy lenses.
my sigma 28-300 f3.5 is quite good but, not to sharp in 300mm.
also speed is my consideration

I LOVE sharpness but and have read your posting on the sharpness of the 1.8 over the 1.4. I already had the 1.4 and have loved it for years. Unfortunately, when shooting infrared it gives me dime size dot in the center of the photo. I decided to get the 1.8 and sure enough it does exactly the same thing. The difference is that the dot is smaller and easier to deal with in Photoshop.
However, after getting the 1.8 I did some shots with my camera on a tripod and compared it to my 1.4. I shot in shadows as well as in sun and can find absolutely no difference between the two lenses in sharpness.
One big difference for me that I don't like is that the 1.8 doesn't focus as close as the 1.4.
Just my 2¢.

yeah u rite, f/1.4 had good closest distance, i had them both now :)
so happy with them... f/1.8 D gives me info bout exposure.
whilst 1.4 give a time to find correct exposure..:p
