View Full Version : Could this be it - the mythical D200???

the people over on dpreview seem to go gaga over what appears to be a sneaked pic of the mythical camera who's name shall not be spoken in public  .
Seems to originate from an chinese forum. The pics are of sufficiently crappy quality (camera phone) to actually be legitimate.

And the chinese version:

Looks tiny. Hope it pans out though.

The camera seems to have borrowed some elements from the F6, which is teeny-weeny itself compared to its predecessor F5. It's probably closer to the D70s in internal guts (let's hope for a good add-on vertical grip to give the thing a bit more balanced feel).
The pictured lens (presumely a 18-200 VR) has caught my interest even more; if true, it would make for an awesome all-around consumer lens.

Chris

If you translate the Chinese page in Google, you will see interesting specs. Not sure I like the body but I bet the performance will be very good.

Found this link, with an even more 'convincing' picture. Note the reference to the D200's listing in the LowePro catalouge.
Is it real or not?

Will it ? won't it? is it? is'nt it? ...you know what I COULD'NT CARE LESS .
I'm not one to rant on here but all this rubbish on forums about the D200 coming is driving me nuts , on dpreview 150 replies and not one talks sense , fredmiranda's the same only milder , PLEASE don't let this normally sensible forum go down the same road .
Nobody knows when the D200 is going to be released , might be dec , might be feb , who knows? , it'll come , along with all the details , lets wait and see , looking at grainy pictures and bouncing up and down squealing ''ME PLEASE '' is'nt going to make it happen any faster .
In my opinion that hybred looks like a cross between the D2X and D70 , with some fuzzy lense which is supposed to be a 18-200VR .who knows .?
Dpreview also's got a thread by a guy who's supposed to have been handed a secret camera supposedity the D200 but without a media slot , christ almighty , who bloody cares .
I'll not look at any more threads about this camera untill Nikon release's a production date , so there .
Rant over

Well ... if you "COULD'NT CARE LESS", then WHY bothering writing lenghty posts complaining about how much you hate reading this stuff. Just don't read it - it's really that simple (but then again, judging by your comments, you must have spent considerable time sifting through all the "sightings").
I usually try to keep my cool, but you really hit a big red button this time. So what if it doesn't turn out to be true, or what if it is indeed true - can't have a little excitement or what?! If the camera arrives - fine; if it doesn't - not the end of the world either. But one should still be allowed for a little wishing, dreaming and hoping for. And not everyone is lucky enough to afford an D2x or S3. I am quite happy with my S2 still, but am also actively looking into an upgrade/backup. So I for one DO BLOODY CARE about any potential candidate showing up within the next little while - sorry if that doesn't fit your style
When I started this thread I did it in good faith, merely providing some tidbits of entertaining news; but I somewhat anticipated someone getting grumpy - hence the "mythical camera who's name shall not be spoken in public" comment. Tough to please everyone these days.
Back to discussing bird and backyard flower pics then - safe, clean and approved
End of my rant
A rather not-so-happy-anymore Chris (but not yet PO'd)

Chris first of all this was'nt a personall attack on you , and i'm entitled to my opinion as much as the next guy , secondly it's not the fact that Nikon are bringing out a new camera that ''could'nt care less about '' more the endless posts that have popped up over the last 6 months without a shread of evidence supporting them .
I have'nt read all the threads just the opening few and then signed off , and i'm certainly not bragging about being able to afford both S3 and D2X i've had to save long and hard for them .
If just reading my reply has ''hit the red button'' then i'm sorry but you should'nt be thin skinned about this , it's not personall and has been bugging me for months .
We've both been on this forum long enough to know each other by now .
I'm not going to apologise for my rant i meant every word of it but i hope that Nikon issue release dates soon and put paid to these rumours once and for all .

Brian - I'm not mad at you or anything; just got a little annoyed that day (well and giving that my place was downhill from the Hersheys chocolate plant didn't put me in the best of moods --> talk about an DISGUSTING smell  ).
Yes, HOPEFULLY Nikon will put the rumours to an end and SOON - I NEED a new cam better today than tommorow; but is has to be the right one which will fit my purposes and will be in the running qualitywise for the next few years as I just can't afford jumping around and flip-flopping between cameras every time a new model hits the shop floor. Right now, I'm sitting between all chairs, trying to find the right model which also fits my strained budget (that pretty much excludes the D2x for price, the D70s lack some features and are somewhat flimsy built, the S3 might actually be still in the running as potential contender would it be just a bit faster and have better AF).
Cheers,
Chris

If I had the time I'd do a search here for all the musings and masaginations we went through discussing the 'mythical D2x" before it arrived. But I'm too old and tired for that today.....
I hope it pans out too. Would save me $2500.

Well, looks like I just bought a new-to-me camera a minute ago - couldn't wait any longer  - it's a Folmer&Swing RB Cycle Graphic in 5x7, the zenit in camera manufacture circa 1905 in the most beautiful laquered Mahagony and Cherry hardwood, brass coated hardware and luxurious Marokkan leather :D Wonder if focus will be fast enough to catch those fleeting Kodak moments.
Coming to think about it - I MUST HAVE COMPLETELY LOST IT - oh, well, time to go to bed :dunce:

There are rumours, and then there is this stuff - straight from a scandinavian distributor:
Förbättringar som har gjorts i PictureProject Ver. 1.6.1
- Support för D200 NEF Filer har lagts till.
- Support för Mac OS X version 10.4 (Tiger) färghantering (colour management) har lagts till i Egenskaper dialogrutan.

SanDee - yup, they have already changed the text, the page was only half that long yesterday. I hate it, when they do that, feeding little "teasers" to the public to keep the rumour mill running. Oh well, I saw it, and now I am quite happy to know that a replacement for my ailing S2 is showing up on the horizon soon.

Nikon UK had some D200 images up last night for about 2 hours - the thing is sweet (about the size of the D70).
Here is a link with some of the pics: http://newnikond200images.blogspot.com/
This guy mirrored the pics too: http://davidsonimagery.com/d200pics/

After having reread www.fotografi.no I now see they are talking about official release next tuesday (01.11.2005).
Also the site insist on their 10.2 MB (or 10.4) prediction, whereas many seem to hope for/expect 12.2
The guys over at Nikonians must be *very* frustrated, site partially down and all hehe :=)

It looks real nice http://nikond200images.blogspot.com/
Specs, read somewhere, 12.4 megapixels, $1999, 3fps, 10 RAW buffer at full res, 5fps at half res with 18 image buffer/
Looks like it has the nice grippy material on the body like the D2x but in a D70 size [maybe a tad smaller]

seems to be the 10MP @ 5fps... which, if true, still rocks and I would rather have the 5fps than 12MP @ only 3fps.
I'm hoping that the high ISO performance of this new camera makes it a compliment to the d2x. I'm talking about the 1600 and 3200 range as I'm quite happy up to 800ISO on my d2x
I'm ALSO hoping that they do a 'kit' with the d200 and the new 18-200 VR for $1999... that would also ROCK.
Seems like MOST of the rumors are that the d200 will be announced on 11/1.
Oh, and there's some new ring flash too. And a vertical grip that has 2 extra batteries in it?? Here's a link I stole from http://www.nikonians.org/dcforum/DCForumID202/10.html that shows some pretty real looking images-
http://www.kosoof.com/archive/2005/Oct/29/335.php
http://rootminus1.com/freepics/thumbnails.php?album=40
The funky Ti-fighter style flash is shown on the second page.
I think the 18-200 VR lens will be in my future either way. But if the D200 is good at high ISO and small, it'd be a perfect back up/compliment and would travel better than the d2x when we go to France next year.
