Monarch butterfly at the Brookside Gardens Butterfly House, Wheaton, MD.

Fuji S2, 80-400mm VR Nikkor - I don't think this one used fill flash, just ambient light

Thanks Igor, Yours is much better, I honestly don't have a single shot of a real butterfly :o That green one though will be around in 3 mos to be placed on the new little girl for her birth announcements :) (mom is irish she wanted green ;) ) It is a rare species though you must know exactly where to look for it ;)

Plus I was so excited to try and floor Jim with my fake one who would think of fake in this thread :haha: :haha:

Mary saw this thread and has abandoned me and shot off to our local butterfly place. No doubt she'll be posting upon her return :)

Here's a variation on one I took a while back.

Great lighting! I have one of that species but under less favorable light. Very nice detail.

Did'nt have much success at Stratfords butterfly farm .
No onboard flash on the D2 , lowish lighting and humidity that took 15 minutes to settle down .
But here are a couple that turned out allrightish , on a scale of 1-10 i'll give these about 4 .
But it's all i got , apart from an iguana lungeing at me .

Brian,

The first one looks like it was taken with the 70-200 because of the background. Did I get that right?

Actually I think the diffused lighting is nice and gives these a good, shadow-free look.

Thought I'd join in with an odd shot.

This was taken whilst hunting trees in the local wood - the subject seemed a bit lethargic - possibly close to, if not already, dead

Fuji S2 + Nikkor 10.5mm fisheye :)

Keith.

They have a short life, much too little time in the sun!
