Hello,
A question out of curiosity really :) I sometimes go out walking and photgraphing with a friend. I have a D2X and he has a D70. Sometimes we swap lenses to get particular shots. What I was wondering is - rather than swapping lenses (and increasing the chances of dust getting in the cameras) could we swap CF cards? i.e if he wants to take a shot with my lens can I just let him put the CF card he is using into my camera and take the shot? Anyone know if doing this is possible- has any problems?
Thanks

It'll just make a new folder on the card called D70 , i've done it several times between the D2X, D70 and S3 .
But since i had trouble with a corrupted card i now use one one set of cards for each camera .and mark them .
But in theory you should'nt have any trouble .

I've never had problem switching cards before and I've done the most I think.
One test, I did between cameras, I used the same 1gb sandisk card in a D1x, S2, D70, DCS645 back for the H1 and the 14n. No problem. There were a couple of folders, but if I remember correctly, the S2, D1x and D70 all used the same folder. I'd be careful switching with the S2 however. If any camera uses the same file name structure, you risk resetting frame numbers. Switching between the D2x and the D70 however, shouldn't be a problem.
More recently, I'm always switching cards with my wife to use on a different lens or because I see something while she has a camera out and I don't or I want a different crop factor. So, I've switched between the 1Ds2, 2x 1D2 and the 20D without any problems. The 1D and 1Ds will use the same folder dropping different file names in and the 20D will use a different folder all together.

I went from a Canon D60 to the Fuji S2 and Mel went from the Nikon D1 to the Fuji S2. We got the cameras on a Friday night and had not one card that would work in them! None of our cards would format on the Fujis so we've always been careful about keeping them separate. I know Mel has two card holders, one for the D70 and one for the S2. My cards float flawlessly between the S2 and S3, just have to remember I've had it in my S3 and on raw when I hit replay on the S2, it scares me to see the exclamation point error message!!!

The only shooting buddy I have also has the S2 & S3, so we swap cards between our 4 on regular occasion, especially when at an event like a festival. It allows us to shoot with 4 cameras and prime/prime zoom lenses without a worrying about dust. It helps that he and I both use the same settings on the S2 & S3 respectively as well. I've never swapped with any other cameras so I wouldnt know how prudent that would be. Sounds like there are some people here with some experience in this department though.

Thanks everyone - looks like it should be OK with a D2X and a D70 - on the other hand not sure I want to let my friend get his hands too firmly on my D2X he might want to keep it :) :)

Im sharing my cards on diferent cameras D70, D100, Canon EOS D300, MarkII, and Cannon D10 and D20 and no problems with my cards only the problem of some diferent folders, allso if S2 find a folder on the card named the same as the folder for the S2 u must only remove the bateries the cr123 and the S2 rename the new folder with another name but this is dificult to happen b/c those cameras that i test have diferent folder names.
I never test to format on cannon and use on fuji but formating in fuji for using in cannon goes well, i allways do this job for my friends that have problems with the cards since with fuji we have a little possibility to format the card even the card is non known from the camera.
