I am willing to accept an ESO (Equipment Smarter than Operator) issue here,
so here goes...

Under normal conditions, my meter in matrix mode gives me a good clen exposure, with a well balnced histogram.

BUT, intoduce some sky, or bright highlights and and the matrix gets weird- I wind up waayyy underexposed.

When I waa S2 guy, I used center wieght and never had these issues. I'm frankly sick of having to correct underexposures.

Any thoughts, comments??

I don't have a D2x (yet) but it sounds like this has some of the same problems that all other cameras have in an auto mode. My conclusion is to never trust an auto function without giving it some help. The best system I have found to make this somewhat better is to "spot meter" and "exposure lock" on the subject to ensure that, at least the most important part of the image is properly exposed.

You might just have an uncalibrated D2X , i'd send it in to get it checked out , mine on matrix is pretty spot on most of time , i used to spend a bit of time adjusting my S3 files with the shadows/highlight , don't have anywhere near the same exposure troubles with the D2X .
Spot metering is fine providing you meter from a 18% grey source , otherwise you can get more problems than with matrix metering .

you both could be right on this- I have never been comfortable with matrix, and this confirms it... also, it may be a problem meter- i'll keep you posted
