I hate to see a blank forum, so I will put an item here for discussion.
I generally have almost no interest in aftermarket warranties, but after selling my D1 recently on e-bay I can see where it might pay off to some extent.
Generally there seem to be two kinds of warranties. Pricey, wide coverage warranties that offer protection against moisture damage, abuse, dropping; and the lower priced warrantees that specifically exclude it.
Looking at Ritzcamera.com's Expanded Service Plans (http://www.ritzcamera.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ProductDisplay?prrfnbr=11633254&prmenbr=153&vprrfnbr=10578112&vcgrfnbr=1009&cgrfnbr=1009&RelatedAccessory=TRUE&STORENAMEPASS=ritzcamera), you can see the former, where you pay $363 (1 year) to $726 - 10% discount (2 years) for a warranty that will basically cover any form of abuse or damage except fire or theft.
On the other end of the scale is the extended warranty from a number of dealers] like [url]www.uniquephoto.com, (http://www.mackcam.com/contact.htm) where I bought my camera through a company called MACK Camera and Video Service (http://www.mackcam.com/war/index.htm). The $99, 3-year warranty (http://www.mackcam.com/war/war12.htm) offered there covers basic repairs, but specifically excludes damage that results from abuse like dropping, or moisture. These are also transferable for a nominal $15 charge.
Since I anticipate taking good care of the equipment, but selling it in a couple of years to trade up to another model, I thought a basic warranty like this would give some peace-of-mind to the purchaser and protect at least the fraction of its current value somewhere between (1/3 to 1/2) I expect that it will have at that time.
What's your opinion on extended warranties or service contracts?
Regards,
Matt
