Probably me and getting tired or something the raw files at 100% are quite sharp actually, I'll look at them closer tomorrow I'm home on the laptop now. Thanks for letting me know JP :)

Good shots Melody.
I think the lens was close to wide open and you had a focusing point in the center, right? That's why the heron's head is out of focus, I have this thing too when shooting tele.
Just click to the upper focusing point to be active and you'll get the head (the most important area) in focus.

Don't recall Igor, I was playing with various settings today, I typically use the single area not the dynamic and the darn bird kept moving his head, as the eyes are what I do try to focus on so I know on some shots I changed it to dynamic, good be the problem, that and I'm sure some camera shake I could feel not holding it steady. Looked at my raw shots again not sharp hey blame it on tired. It was still different then horses for a change.
Thanks for looking and the suggestions.

The whole bird looks blury to me... could it be that the lens isn't sharp a full aperture ? ...doubt it ! Did you shoot handheld Melody  ?

I'm not even looking at it again yet...I just woke up...man it must have been bad  It has to be ME, yep it was handheld I was getting hot and had carried the 400 2.8 with the 200 2.0 one at 10lbs? and the other at 7 with the camera tripod and bag....believe me the 200 2.0 even with the 1.7 tc is plenty sharp. I'll look today JP and find you one that's in focus  well maybe I will!

glad to see it's got feet. Hate to see a heron-on-a-stick.
:)
Birds are cool Melody, keep shootin'!
