Got my USA model S2 today and noticed that the RAW converter EX software is only intended for use in Windows ME, 2000 and XP. Unfortunately I'm still on WIN 98 SE. Will this software work on Win 98?

Thanks

There is a way afterall!

After installing the FinePix viewer you insert the Hyper-Utility CD in My Computer, cancell the auto installation wizzard (which won't work in WIN 98) then go to the RAFCNV directory. Just click on the setup.exe and Raw File Converter EX loads.

It does work. Can't get the thumbnails with an enlarged pic that you are working on but otherwise it works. I tried it from an earlier thread you posted.

Based on my experience I would recommend updating to either ME or Windows 2000. We use both of these and they are good preformers. They should also work well on most machines that work well with Windows 98 SE. We leave the Windows 2000 machines on for weeks at a time with no lockups at all.

stay away from ME, very unstable OS for file systems, if you do use it, back up DAILY.

I have had 95 and 98 go wacko and not be able to be recovered, but never with ME or Windows 2000. And as far as daily backups go, you should do this regardless of the OS. You never know when you will hear the rattle and clang of a hard disk crashing and if you do not have your work backed up then you only have yourself to blame. I would say that nearly all of my failures have been due to hardware failure and not software or file system failure. Two other things you need to do besides the daily backup are to regularly defragment your file system and install and antivirus program and keep it up to date weekly. I use Norton Systemworks for both but there are other products that are just as good. I have used Norton products for so long that I once called the company for tech support and actually talked to Peter Norton.

You little namedropper Wayne first Johnny Lydon , now Peter Norton,:D , i,ve used ME , crashed at least once a day for a year , XP' or 2000, is much more stable , but get a new disc ,not an upgrade or you'll still have trouble. an upgrade only installs over your old o/s so any problems are still there, as i found out.

And I admit that ME is not as stable as Win 2000. But I really do have a lot less trouble with ME than I had with 98 or 95. The only problem is that ME will not work with more than 512MB of RAM. 2000 is the OS that I use for all but a few machines and I love it so much that I have not had anything to do with XP. And I use an external hard disk to back up all my important stuff daily. I have been around too many crashes to risk loosing more than a few hours work. Be sure that you only use the external drive to "backup" your internal drive. That way you have a copy of your work on both your external drive and your internal dirve. I doubt that they would both fail at the same time. And when you use an external drive then it is easy to hop on another machine and finish what you are doing when your hard drive fails just before a looming deadline. For permanent storage of files you no longer use I would recommend CD or DVD written two at a time and stored in different places. Just in case.

Husawis,

If you're replying to me this is what worked for me on WIN98SE. You need to cancell the installation wizzard and go into "my computer" to access the CD. Then just do the following.

After installing the FinePix viewer you insert the Hyper-Utility CD in My Computer, cancell the auto installation wizzard (which won't work in WIN 98) then go to the RAFCNV directory. Just click on the setup.exe and Raw File Converter EX loads.
