I shouldn't even post this question because I can probably go home from my day job this evening and figure this out myself from the EXIF info on the picture. When you get a little older, you need a reminder. At a minimum, this evening I'll read this and take a look.

I guess I haven't had many occasions to use the flash outside. Maybe I just normally try to take pictures from a position that I don't need it. The other day I was sitting under a big table umbrella, across from a pretty young lady and on the spare of the moment took a picture. Sunny day, her face was completely shadowed, couldn't see her at all. So I popped up the onboard flash and there she was. Pretty as a picture. Your not surprised, right. So what is my question?

This was just a family affair so I was in the 'Program' mode (P mode necessary in case wife tries to take a pictures). Very bright day. Program mode was coming up with 300th of a second and shorter all day. I didn't really pay attention when I was taking this flash picture, but If the camera only allows a minimum of 125th of a second when using a flash, what did it do to keep from over exposing the background of the picture. Go to F63 or what?

P.S. If you ask me to post the picture I'll have to go to the trouble of superimposing my wife into this situation, just in case she reads this.

There's a considerable loss of light in the shade, particularly under a canopy or something. Certainly the camera had to stop down considerably from "daylight" exposures, but if you were shooting 1/300th in sun there should have been plenty of additional f-stop room--no need to go to f63!
